Names We Don't Hate

Hi! I'm due in June and I've always loved names and naming, so I'm happy to find this community.

We want to use family names for middles: Furey for a boy, and a variant of Jane/Joan/Joanna/Johanna for a girl. (My middle and my mom's middle is Joan, but I don't really like it enough to pass it on, so I was going to twist it a little.) Our frontrunners right now are Samuel Furey or Ivy Johanna.

The other names we're both thinking about are:

Thanks! I love Lydia. Grant's my husband's suggestion, but it's growing on me.

My only worry with Elliot is the girl on Scrubs ... do you think it'll sound like a girl's name to some people?

Thalia - I like the association but I can't shake the Chalet School reference where a girl named Thalia meets "did you say Failure?" when people ask her name. I think it's too obvious a nickname, unfortunately.

Otherwise I like them all except Asher.

Like the word fury. It's got a bunch of family connections, so it's pretty important to my husband that we use it.

I like Ivy Jane, but I worry it's a little short.

Alice - ok, always seemed like a mn to me.
Cassandra (Cassie nn) - like it but know quite a few little girls with this name.
Celia - LOVE it
Felicia - like it a lot.
Georgia - this is going to be my second daughter's name (I'm due in March) so of course, LOVE. :)
Greta/Gretchen - love
Juliet (Julie nn) - so so for me.
Lydia - really like it.
Ruby - eh. but that's bc I knew a little girl with the name and didn't really care for her.
Thalia - I'm on the fence about this one. I kinda like it but agree with some of the drawbacks others have pointed out.

Boy

John/Jack - love, especially Jack. I thought John was kind of boring (because EVERYONE on my mom's side of the family is named John) but my friend named her son this and it actually is very cute and suits him.
Zachary - like it, but I think it's becoming a bit overused.

I love the name Ivy and I like the name Jane, but Johanna flows better with Ivy than Jane does.
I also like Ruby and Gretchen, however I think I would have a hard time naming my daughter Gretchen because it's so harsh sounding, I do like the name though soooo I don't know.

I LOVE the name Grant, it's in my top 3 for boys names.
I also like Asher, it's too bad your husband doesn't like it.

IVY JANE IS ♥ (Evi (the dutch way of Ivy) is my number one girls name^^ )
i also like Alice, Juliet, lydia & Ruby (all of them are in my top 20)

For a boy i think Samuel Furey is nice :D

Juliet is the middle name I have picked out if my little fetus turns out to be a little girl. :] First name Adelaide.

Oooh I love Asher. Fiance and I are not trying to concieve for a year or so but we have had all our names picked out for years. We have three boys names and Asher Everett is one of them. If we have 3 boys we'll use all 3 of our boys names. If we have only one it will be tricky to pick.

I prefer Ivy Johanna...I think it sounds pretty, and it's different (but not weirdly different.)

Re: the other names on your list -- I like just about all of them, with the exception of Gretchen. Whenever I hear that name, all I concentrate upon is the "retch," LOL

Alice - Don't like it because of a girl I was at school with.
Cassandra (Cassie nn) - I used to really like this, but my ex always said it sounded like a dog's name and that's put me off a little. Still a nice name though.
Celia - Hmm, a few years ago I probably would've hated it, but it's grown on me somewhat.
Felicia - Don't like it.
Georgia - I've never liked it but no idea why.
Greta/Gretchen - I think Gretchen is quite harsh sounding, but Greta is nice.
Juliet (Julie nn) - I like Juliet, but prefer Jules as a nickname.
Lydia - Not my style really.
Ruby - Heh - I like it ;)
Thalia - It looks nice. How is it pronounced?

Asher - Yeah this is ok, and I'm fussy with boys' names :)
August - Ooh, no.
Elliot - Another name I've always hated for no reason.

Grant - I can't help but think of Grant Mitchell - a thug in a British soap opera...
John/Jack - Both very common but probably because they're both nice names :)
Zachary - Possibly a little Biblical-sounding for my tastes, but it's good name.

Oh yeah, I really dislike Ivy for some reason, sorry. I prefer Joanna to Johanna though, and I prefer either to Jane. I reckon about half the girls I went to school with had the middle name Jane so I see it as a bit of a "filler".

Samuel Furey is very nice.

That's my concern with Jane -- it feels like a filler to me, too. With a long first name it could work, but with Ivy it seems much too short.

I do not like your front runners, but I LOVE the names Cassandra, Celia, Georgia, Juliet, Lydia and Thalia.

I also love August, Grant and John/Jack! And I do like Ivy Jane better, even though I'm still not too impressed by the name. When in June are you due? (I was actually due June 14th but didn't come out till the 30th!)
