Hello... I don't know whether or not I'm pregnant (my husband and I are "not trying, not preventing" -- long explanation for this, that I don't really feel like going into at the moment...it's all over at my private lj if you're interested), but if I am we definitely want to name our first child after my mother, who was diagnosed in August with terminal lung cancer, and my grandfather who passed away in early September from a massive heart attack. I'd really like some opinions about the names that we've chosen. These are our definite choices, so if your opinions are negative, please comment them tastefully and tactfully, or not at all. Thanks in advance.

For a girl: Aurora-Cinda Elizabeth, Hebrew name Sarah. Her nickname will be Rory. Aurora-Cinda is Latin, and it means "Cindy's dawn." Elizabeth is for my granddad.

For a boy: Cohen Edward, Hebrew name Seth. His nickname, if anything, will be Eddie -- off of Edward -- though we probably won't be shortening this name. Cohen would obviously be for my mom, and Edward for my granddad.

Our last name is 10 letters, two words, and it sort of rhymes. It's Italian in origin. We know that if we have a daughter first, her name is going to be really long, but we're okay with that.

Again, thanks in advance.

IMO, I'd switch it to be Cinda-Aurora

Yes, but for the non Latin speakers (and I'd venture to say most of us are non-Latin speakers), I think it flows better as Cinda-Aurora.

What does it mean that a child has a Hebrew name that is different from their given name. Do you call the person by that name ever?

I am not crazy about Aurora-Cinda because I hate dashes. It should just be a daughter with 2 middle names (which I love), Aurora Cinda Elizabeth De Whatever (the de whatever is because that's the only 2 word last name I could think of).

Cohen is AWESOME, and I also love Seth. :)

Aurora-Cinda is a bit of a mouthful for me, but I do love both names. And I plan on naming my first daughter, if I have one, Victoria and calling her Rory. I think it's a great name or a girl.

Cohen is a very handsome name.

Someone gets called their Hebrew name in ritual situations, like when they are called up to (read) the Torah.

I don't speak/read Latin, but if Aurora-Cinda really does translate to "Cindy's dawn", then I believe that both "Cindy" and "dawn" are nouns. Verbs can't be possessed.

That being said, I really like Aurora-Cinda, and the meaning behind it makes it even better.

Seth Cohen is a main character in "The OC"... I don't know if you are aware of that or if it's just an odd coincidence. I do like "Cohen Edward" though.

Aurora-Cinda Elizabeth is way too much of a mouthful for me... I'd like it better if it was Aurora Elizabeth-Cinda. "Rory" is an adorable nickname though.

:)

I agree, I think Cinda-Aurora is really awkward to say.

I like Aurora and love Elizabeth. I am assuming Cinda is your mom and I think that Cinda's Dawn is a lovely meaning. I dislike Rory, mostly because small children have a difficult time pronouncing their "R's" and it will sound like "Wowy" for a while...
I do like Cohen Edward and Seth.

Seth Cohen is the first thing I thought of, too!

To the OP: I like the meaning of Aurora-Cinda, but I really don't like hyphenated first names. Aurora Cinda-Elizabeth might be nice, although I think even that is a bit much since your last name is two words. I mean, the poor girl would have FIVE names to deal with! Since Cinda doesn't appear to have any emotional significance to you, other than its literal meaning, I think Aurora Elizabeth would be a beautiful alternative.

Thirded.

To the OP, honestly, I don't like any of those, except Seth. I think Seth is a great name.

I think they're all nice names, but I'd drop the - between Aurora and Cinda. Would you actually call her Aurora-Cinda?

I think family names are great, and all those names are lovely.

I agree. I really hate hyphenated names at the best of times.. but this is not one of those times because both Aurora and Cinda are such full names. Especially because they end in the same sound, when they would be said together all the time, they would be so heavy and even a bit hard to say. But just separating them and making it Aurora Cinda Elizabeth would be beautiful

I like them! Especially Rory for Aurora. However I don't like the hyphenated name. I'd opt more for the 2 middle names personally.

i really like Aurora, dont like Cinda. i dont think that works as a double name at all. Rory is one of my favourite boys names, dont like it on a girl..
Love Cohen, even tho it's nms.

I think Aurora-Cinda Elizabeth is a really nice name and I like the nickname 'Rory'. The only thing I don't like is the hyphen, as many people above me stated.

And I love the names Cohen and Seth for a boy. They're unique but not trendy so they'll be able to stand the test of time.

Actually, Latin doesn't care about word order, as long as you've declined properly. That said, Aurora is a much nicer name to have up front than Cinda, IMO.

Cohen is an interesting choice as a first name. Are you Levite?

I LOVE Rory, and Aurora's more feminine if she wants that. I like how much you thought about the family meanings behind these.

Ditto. For 'dawn' to be a verb (as in the phrase "the day dawns"), it would be "Cindy dawns".

Cohen is one of those names that screams LEVITE if you're educated about it... but unfortunately, most people using Cohen as a first name these days just use it because it sounds cool and ends with the -en sound, like many popular names, never realizing it actually has sacred significance.
