Hey everyone, I'm new. :)

I love LOVE names and have since I was a kid even though I don't have plans to have kids any time soon.

I wanted to share with you some of the names in my family, which is all Russian. I don't know if you'll like them or not, feel free to voice your opinions.

Haha I totally agree with the Sasha thing. Although it can be used for girls and boys I still think it's an awesome unisex name, just like Alexander/Alexandra works well imo.

My favorite Russian boys name is Misha. I had a best friend from Moscow with that name.

My name doesn't translate into other languages (it's Latin so it's at least kind of familiar in Europe, especially Italy, but it's always the same), it has no nicknames (it's not long enough but also isn't short) AND the English language decided it would be fun to name a boat thing after it! LOL

Misha's short for Mihail (mee-kha-eel), the Russian Michael. I love it too, I had a bf named that. :)

I like some Russian names, and have a bit of a Russian heritage myself (a great grandpa)

Marina - I don't like it either, but I know I like the was Russians pronounce it. I know a girl named Marena, and her family says ma-ray-nuh. YUCK. Yours in much prettier than that.
Lena and Valerii - LOVE Lena, not sure how to pronounce Valerii.
Alexander - love it, hate the nn because it's so girly in the US.
Dmitri - Love this. It's also Greek!
Victor - meh.
Dinah - Love it for the Biblical context (Jacob's daughter)
Irina - makes me think of figure skating (Irina Slutskaya)
Gregory - my first love's name. :)
Arkadi - interesting!
Oleg - meh
Eugene - the city I went to college in. Blech.
Yulii (Russian version of Julius) - Interesting. I knew a Ukrainian girl named Yulia.
Maria - I like.
Natalia - Our Russian exchanged student's name--LOVE IT!
Tatyana - I like it a lot, though I would spell it Tatiana.

My great grandpa was Michel (prn Mee-shell). Is that spelling right? It could have been Mishel...

Yeah I don't know where Arkadi, which is a greek name and should have analogies in another languages, dissapeared to. Then again Kiril is also a popular Russian name and in English it's Cyrill which is SO old fashioned.

I love the Dinah biblical story, it's so sad but then so full of subtext and double meaning, imo.

Mishel is actually French and Russians never pronounce it that way, to my knowledge. The soft "sh" doesn't really work with the langauge. Maybe he spelled it differently somehow in Russian?

It's possible. I never knew him. Could it have been a nickname for something too? My great Grandma was actually Greek, not Russian, so maybe she named him that.

i love Dmitri, but i would write Dimitri.
My sister is named Valerie :P

Alexander is great and i like also Sasha for a boy :)

You know now that you mention it I'm not so sure Dmitri's his correct full name anymore. I know Dimitri is how it's pronounced, most often, but I seem to recall that on official documents it's Dmitri. Though now i'm not sure!

Yeeeaaah names like Yulii/Julius and Valerii have become more and more unpopular cause of how common Yulia/Julia and Valerie (Russian - Valeria) have become. My dad, who actually lives in US (while I do not) changed his name to Larry. Which I think is HORRIBLE but he didn't wanna continue answering questions about his "girly weird name" lol

yes i've heared Dmitri is the real russian name, but i'd write Dimitri because here (netherlands) thats the "common" way of writing it :)

is Valerii the same pronounced as Valerie... or is it valer-i-i?
