What name do you like alot and am sad that you can't use because of other's perceptions/how much they would get teased/etc?

I LOVE Judas...I'm not religious and I don't know the whole story, but I know I can't name a son Judas when I live in Bible Belt, USA. :( But it's just so gorgeous and speaks volumes to me.

Yeah I like the name Judah but I'm afraid people will think of Judas and stuff or they will think it's a girl name.

what's the history behind the name?

Judah was the oldest son of Jacob and the forefather of one of the 12 tribes of Israel. Ancient Israel broke off into two kingdoms one had all of the 11 tribes and the other was Judea. Israel proper was conquered and all the 11 tribes were "lost" but Judea held on for years after that and when it was conquered it's inhabitants did not get absorbed into other cultures. Hence most of the Jews (comes from the word Judean) of today are descended from the tribe of Judah.
Also Judah the Maccabee is the hero who triumphed over the Hellenizers and took back the Temple in the story of Hannukah.
Judah is a very noble name there have been many other famous Judahs throughout the ages, Judah Halevi, Judah HaNasi etc
Many Jews today are named Judah or Yehuda (the Hebrew pronunciation).

Obviously, that is not an issue for Jews.

But if someone Christian is considering the name Judah they might be interested in the fact that according to Christianity Jesus is a descendant of Judah.

Also I thought that according to Christianity Christ was destined to die to redeem the sins of mankind. Judas betrayed him so that he could fulfill that.

And even so when I look at the name Judah I don't immediately think Judas. But then I am not Christian.

I agree that Judah does not really conjure up Judas. I would not stay away from the name Judah at all, because it just doesn't have the same connotations, although it's really the same name.

As for it only being an issue for Christians, I'm not sure - the idea of Judas has made its way into secular culture as a kind of synonym for traitor or untrustworthy person, so I think people who don't care about Judas Iscariot as betrayer of Jesus would still connect the name Judas to that.

As for the theological side, that Judas was part of the plan for salvation - well, yes, but that doesn't make him a positive character at all. And the story of Judas' suicide is pretty gruesome!

But again - Judah is all good ;)

I guess I was just trying to point out that Judas Iscariot doesn't stop Jews from using the name Judah. Because I wasn't initially commenting on the name Judas that the OP liked I was commenting on the name Judah that [livejournal.com profile] monalyssasmile liked.
For my thoughts on whether or not "it's really the same name" see my second comment to [livejournal.com profile] dumbest3

But yeah, no worries I see what you are saying.

Cool.

My point is that Iscariot was named Yehuda/Judah, but the Greek writers rendered that as Ioudas (or something like that) /Judas which is the name we have come to associate with that character. But I do think you're right that same origin does not equal same name!

And that is a very impressive list of John-like names :)

also there's the simple fact that Judah and Judas are not the same name.
Do you believe that Ian, Sean, Jean, Johann, Jan, Hans,Ivan, Joao, Juan, Giovanni, Ioanni, Jansz, Iwan, Gianni, Yochannan and John are all the same name?

I don't think very many people will make that connection. Most people know that it is a Biblical name, and it's VERY different from Judas.

I know 2 children names Judah and the families are Bible-believing Christ-followers.

I agree - Judah hasn't gained those connotations, although Judas is just the Greek form of the Hebrew name!

I'm not a fan of the name, but the Judas thing isn't the reason. And people who think it's a girls name are just ignorant, and you'll always have plenty of those around :(

I adore the name Judas but had honestly forgotten about it until this post. It's such a pretty name but I sadly the kid would get too much crap.

Personally I like the name Chaos for a kid. I tried to get the husband to go with me on it but he said no way so now I'm thinking Lucius which is still very pretty.

Galen. It's great. But... "gay-len."

Florian and Theophrastus. They'd get their asses kicked, for sure.

I also like the the name Galen and had it on my list. I even worked with a Galen - wonderful guy who carried it perfectly. And now we have a German-born intern named Florian! I'll let you know when I meet a Theophrastus! :)

Do you watch Battlestar Galactica? The Chief's name is Galen and I always think about how great it is.

Growing up I loved the name Hunter Drake for a little boy. But, back then I planned on being married and having changed my name by the time I had a baby. So, Hunter Fisher to me is just baaad. I might as well make his middle name Trapper or Gatherer or something, haha. :P

Now I'm hoping real hard for a girl so I can use my favorite girl name with no negativity!

I like Chaya but I fear the general population (and my family) won't be able to pronounce it properly and I wouldn't want her to be called "Hiya!" like someone saying hello all the time.

Doesn't matter how much I love a name, if I think my kid is going to be teased I won't pick that name. Erik middle name, Benjamin, was slated to be his first name until a coupleo f weeks before he was born. Suddenly I decided that I couldn't give him the initals BS because it would be too mean.

From: [identity profile] miss-tee.livejournal.com
if you exclude the middle name initial my fiance's initials are BS.

Why not? I think it's wonderful!!

It's got a classical origin, and great nicknames (Penny, Nell) - what's the problem with it?

*sigh* I fell in love with Sophia for my daughter, and then other Sophias came out of the woodworks. a handful of women in the pregnancy communities are naming theirs Sophia, and it's just.... everywhere now.

which is another reason I'll name the baby, if a boy, Leif. after Leif Erickson. I've not ever heard anyone here in the States call their boy that, to my knowledge. Leif Christov. ehe.
