(no subject)

My husband came up with this one.... I really like it.

He wants to name our son "Maven."
I think it's beautiful. It's not a name, I know... But it's a word with a flattering definition. It's not like calling him "Garbage Truck" or "Pile of Bricks."

So I ask you, would you make fun of Maven if he went to your junior high school?

Also, I think I saw a commercial on VH1 for a reality show where one of the character's name was Maven. Has anyone else heard this used before?

Wait is it Maven like Raven or like the Ma from Matt ven?

[identity profile] sarahgeddes.livejournal.com 2006-10-25 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah for some reason that makes me like it less. I was thinking the other way. I still wouldn't make fun of it though.

maven always struck me as sort of a feminine name but i like it anyway.

[identity profile] cerise-blue.livejournal.com 2006-10-25 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
yep! a few years ago i had an employee named maven. she was lovely. :D

[identity profile] cerise-blue.livejournal.com 2006-10-25 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
it's a beautiful name for either sex! i think the idea of assigning a preferred gender to a name is pretty silly. sure, we'll all have our own ideas about it (for me, it's inherently feminine because of association) but when it's used on an individual, the name becomes his or her own! i think it'd be a great name for a little boy!

[identity profile] sarahrose.livejournal.com 2006-10-25 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed.

[identity profile] dosequisgirl.livejournal.com 2006-10-25 08:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Maven is a wrestler. Yeah, he was on a VH1 show.
I wasn't one to make fun of people in school, so I can't tell you if he would get made fun of.

[identity profile] dosequisgirl.livejournal.com 2006-10-25 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I had to ask my fiancé. He said Maven was a good character. He won a reality show called Tough Enough and become a wrestler from that show. He was on The Surreal Life on VH1, I didn't watch much of it to form an opinion of him. I don't think he's a bad guy though and most people probably won't know who he is.

[identity profile] dosequisgirl.livejournal.com 2006-10-25 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Be warned, he's very hot, at least I think so. :P
Congratulations on the baby, by the way!

[identity profile] coffeewench69.livejournal.com 2006-10-25 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
He was a decent wrestler, got kinda swept aside and didn't get a push like he could have. He definitely didn't have a "OMG I HATE HIM FOREVER' storyline.

[identity profile] sarahrose.livejournal.com 2006-10-25 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I like it. I wouldn't make fun of most names on real people.

[identity profile] bloomingtulip.livejournal.com 2006-10-25 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it's a wrestler's name but I don't know anything about him.

I definitely like it on its own and would not make fun of it.

Maven sounds like a combination of Mave and Raven to me. Because of Mave I think it sounds a bit feminine,
but I didn't make fun of anyone at school, and I doubt people make fun of the wrestler :).

That's exactly what I thought. I've never heard it as a name before though, and I imagine if I knew a boy called Maven I'd think of it as a male name without much trouble. It may not be to everyone's taste, but it doesn't strike me as the kind of name which would be laughed at.

[identity profile] liss07.livejournal.com 2006-10-25 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree about the shortened version, Mave is feminine, because Maeve is an actual name, but I rather like it myself :)

[identity profile] liss07.livejournal.com 2006-10-25 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Ahhhh! "Have" as in "here have another apple."? Now I think I get it hehe, and yeah Mav is definately better than Mave ;)

[identity profile] liss07.livejournal.com 2006-10-25 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL! I was thinking of Maverick when I figured out how you'd pronounce it ;) It is definately so much manlier, Maeve is a girl's name (and one I love) so Mav pronounced like that would have been odd, especially as I do really like Maven for a boy :D I've never heard it being used either btw :)

[identity profile] hitzpink.livejournal.com 2006-10-25 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
It sounds very feminine to me. Like an old lady name.

[identity profile] krosp.livejournal.com 2006-10-25 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree, because it reminds me of Mavis, which I know several old ladies who have that name.. and also Maeve which I also see as an old lady name.

[identity profile] hitzpink.livejournal.com 2006-10-26 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
YES, Mavis. I couldn't pinpoint which old lady name it reminded me of exactly, but Mavis is definitely it.

[identity profile] xfadedstarletx.livejournal.com 2006-10-25 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I really like it, I think its a great name.

:-/

interesting but It sounds like a girl's name to me.

[identity profile] politicking.livejournal.com 2006-10-26 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
when i read "Maven" all i can think of is Mavis Beacon ("Mavis Beacon teaches typing" stuff i did in computer class when i was in elementar school), i don't know why haha

but i kind of like it

[identity profile] trissyd.livejournal.com 2006-10-26 06:01 am (UTC)(link)
I thought of Mavis Beacon too!!

[identity profile] darabelle.livejournal.com 2006-10-26 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
Even though the word maven is not gender-specific, it sounds feminine to me because of a group my mother belongs to. But other than that, I rather like it, and I don't think I'd make fun of a kid named Maven, no.

"Garbage Truck" HAHAHA.

[identity profile] mysticamor.livejournal.com 2006-10-26 04:05 am (UTC)(link)
I love the Mavin a lot. There is a wrestler with that name...I don't know anything about him except that he's freakin hot! I think it's a great name and not feminine at all. I wouldn't make fun of it but then again I like uncommon unique names. :)

[identity profile] miss-tee.livejournal.com 2006-10-26 10:58 am (UTC)(link)
sorry but it does sound like a girl's name to me.
And the nickname Mav reminds me of Maverick...not from Top Gun, from the show Maverick with James Garner/or the movie Maverick with James Garner and Jodie Foster and Mel Gibson.

[identity profile] poespretty.livejournal.com 2006-10-26 01:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I know someone who named their cat that. but he's a boy, so no girly associations here!

[identity profile] xcuore.livejournal.com 2006-10-26 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)
i like Maven ^^
