My boyfriend is obbsessed with video games [eg for PS2; XBOX360 etc] and would love to name our next child after a game or character..

So far he has come up with -

Virgil & Dante [DEVIL MAY CRY]

and i'm like.... no....just no...

is there any names out of video games you would deem suitable to use and actually sound nice not to far out there?

.. I would say don't let your boyfriend name your kid after a PS2 game? Names should be a little more thought out then that.

Just say no to naming your child after a video game.

I love how we're anti-video game names but pro-book names in this community. And I don't even play video games. I just understand that a true video game following has a developed backstory with character attributes. What's wrong with naming a child a name you find meaningful based off a character who shows loyalty or devotion or another characteristic you enjoy. Noah is used in FF and it has biblical ties. I actually had to research that since I'm clueless but I wouldn't see anything wrong with it. I mean, people like Atticus too.

I would avoid names like Cloud Strife from FF but I would also avoid names like Boo. There's good and bad in any genre.

I second that. All of it.

Personally I like Dante it's on my short list, but I'm on odd duck and didn't know it was from a video game. I have a book on "cool baby names" and they have a whole section on names from video games some include:

Boys: Aidyn, Akuji, Arc, Ash, Daxter, Kage, Kain, and the only one I can think of is Milo. That's some game hubby's friend did and he named the lead character after his kid.

Personally I don't play them but I'm married to a video game programmer soooo I end up knowing random things I actually don't care much about :)

Good Luck!

I play a lot of video games, mostly RPG's, and while some of them have some crazy names, others have really good names. Some good examples:

Boys: Gale, Locke, Edgar, Oden, Vincent, Reeve, Roland

Girls: Terra, Celes, Kairi, Elena, Faris, Freya, Leila, Lenne, Phoenbe, Raine, Rinoa, Argilla, Sera, Aerith/ Aeris

There are like, lots more... but yeah, video games rock ;)

i mention this a lot in here, but my good friends named their baby girl Aeris. she's beautiful and wonderful, and the name suits her.

I would so name my baby Aeris. SIGH.
I'm actually considering using an FF name for middle names.
And I LOVE Leon for a boy.

AWWWWWW that's so awesome! :D Granted, Aeris is the incorrect translation from the Japanese to American localization, buuuuut Aeris is still a very pretty name regardless ;)

Um...this maybe is not relevant to the discussion, but I think to most people, Virgil and Dante are not names from a video game.

Yeah.. they're writers. When I see those two names the words "inferno" and "hell" immediately come to mind.

For a long time I was really afraid I'd end up with a daughter named Zelda.
