I met a little girl yesterday named Linden. She was super cute so it kind of made me like the name.

This is from Behind the Name:

Either from Old English linde "lime tree" or else an elaboration of LINDA

The last time it was in the top 1,000 was 1947 (at 921), so points of uniqueness. But it was apparently used as a boys name, ranking right between Ezekiel and Palmer, go figure.

I went to school with a boy named Lyndon, which AFAICT is the more common English spelling. My first reaction to Linden would be to think of the German "Unterdenlinten" (under the lime trees). It's also the name of a local building firm. The tree is more commonly called "linden-tree" in England and I know at least three pubs and hotels named that, so it's not a name I'd use personally. But it is pretty.

I think I prefer Linnet, when looking at names with that kind of sound. (It's a bird, and is not pronounced like Lynette.)

I do like the way it sounds and looks but I would never use it. It's the name of a town near me, and my train stopped there every day for 4 months when I was commuting to school in NYC... so I just can't see using it as the name of one of my children.

I like it, but it also makes me think of Lyndon B Johnson the US President and not that that is necessarily a bad thing, it's just odd if we are talking about Linden for a girl.

I knew someone would make a Lyndon comment. However it does have a slightly different sound, when said correctly. Although they might sound pretty similar with a midwestern accent (where I'm from).

It does say that it is a feminine name. It's feminine enough for me without having a girly-girl belle tagged onto the end of it. It's kind of sad that everyone is reminded of a male name. Sad for that little girl at least.

Well... I think it might be fine for a child born now, because I don't think most grade school children know of Lyndon B. Johnson. IMO elementary school might be the wost time to have a different name. And besides that how many Lyndons could one person possibly know? I've known a whole 0 in my life.

I have no idea what a midwestern accent sounds like; in English accents they are identical (Lind'n, like London with an ih instead of an uh).

[Generally, Behind the Name is a long way from accurate in a number of cases, so I wouldn't put all your faith in information there.]

I've known a guy with the name Lyndon, but I still think it would be fine on a girl. usually I don't like guys names on girls but this one seems quite unisex in the first place.

hmmm.. I know a boy named Lyndon... so I only think of it as that.. but i could work on a girl. A guy at my dads work has a daughter named Linley.... maybe youd like that :) i LOVE the name Palmer! There is alittle boy at my church named that.. and hes so cute.. of course hes named that bc his moms maiden name was palmer.

I think you learn about all the presidents in school at some point. Regardless of that or having not known any Lindens, I absolutely think it sounds masculine and not feminine whatsoever.
