I like Dakota, I think it's cute. My own personal hangup would be that they're so common, though - at least in the United States. Maybe elsewhere they're not? I'm not sure!

[identity profile] xcuore.livejournal.com 2006-10-07 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Dakota is totally not common in Europe.

I'm totally naming my next child Russian. =P Or better yet Cyka.

[identity profile] queen-mab.livejournal.com 2006-10-07 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I hate them. But that's mainly because they're really common and I'm tired of seeing them. Sorry.

[identity profile] elsh.livejournal.com 2006-10-08 04:12 am (UTC)(link)
Me too. Trendy.

[identity profile] rubytitania.livejournal.com 2006-10-07 08:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't really like any of them, but I think that has more to do with the fact that they're all so trendy than becase of the actual names themselves.

[identity profile] -door-.livejournal.com 2006-10-07 08:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I know that they are super common and trendy, but I love them anyways.

[identity profile] tiffrobyn.livejournal.com 2006-10-07 08:25 pm (UTC)(link)
This community is going to tear you apart because the names aren't "yoonique".

Personally, I think they're cute.

[identity profile] elsh.livejournal.com 2006-10-08 04:13 am (UTC)(link)
Not at all. Unique names can easily be just as bad.

[identity profile] julieannie.livejournal.com 2006-10-07 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I think they are trashy and overused. But at least there are no y's in those names.

[identity profile] cassandrakfreaq.livejournal.com 2006-10-08 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
I agree completely

[identity profile] lavandersparkle.livejournal.com 2006-10-07 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I am sorry I just hate all of those names, especially Madison. But not because there not 'unique' just the name themselves. Infact I love some popular names as well.

[identity profile] p-inkjeans.livejournal.com 2006-10-07 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Can you spell "trendy"?

If my name was Dakota, I would pretty much hate my parents forever. I hate it, even for boys.

[identity profile] queen-mab.livejournal.com 2006-10-07 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Icon love.

[identity profile] kmommat.livejournal.com 2006-10-07 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I LOVE dakota and madison!!!!!! Mackenzie seems a little snooty to me. but its still cute

[identity profile] ladyartemisa.livejournal.com 2006-10-07 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
overdone.
trendy.
hideous.
and ick.

[identity profile] peach-rose-girl.livejournal.com 2006-10-07 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I think they're pretty terrible. They could be worse, but they're pretty blah and will be very dated in 20 or 40 years.

I would venture to guess that 97% of people who name their children Dakota have never been to the Dakotas, and if they had, they wouldn't use it as a name. The other two I've never really condsidered girls names either. Not just "oh, that's traditionally a boys name" because I really don't care about that. Madison is a last name with the word "son" in it. In scandanavian countries, "-son" means "son of." In Scotland, "Mac" means "son of" as well. (In Ireland the same thing would be "Mc.")

[identity profile] sotypical42483.livejournal.com 2006-10-08 04:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree with you. I'm from North Dakota and actually the first time I heard of people using that name, I was like WTFFF?! It's the same as Phoenix, now I live in Arizona (like 2 minutes outside of Phoenix) and I think it's weird people would name their children that.

[identity profile] xcuore.livejournal.com 2006-10-07 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I TOTALLY DISLIKE MAKENZIE & DAKOTA!!
not because they are "popular" (here in europe no one names their kids dakota/mackenzie) but because;
1 Mackenzie is like a last name
2 Dakota ARE PEOPLE.
I'm sorry, but i just dislike those names because IMO they are ridiculous

Madison is very cute and nice.

[identity profile] thejoysofjess.livejournal.com 2006-10-07 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Last name
Last name
State/Native American tribe.

[identity profile] maude.livejournal.com 2006-10-07 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Madison is wanna-be high class and Mackenzie and Dakota are just plain trashy.

[identity profile] cocinadelfeto.livejournal.com 2006-10-08 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
Mackenzie - From the Gaelic surname Mac Coinnich, which means "son of Coinneach"
Madison - From a surname which means "son of MAUD"

So you have two "son of" names and a name that describes a group of people. No.

[identity profile] turabiannights.livejournal.com 2006-10-08 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
I pretty much agree with most previous posters. These are really, really overdone, and will be quite dated in a few years, particularly Madison.

[identity profile] sherball.livejournal.com 2006-10-08 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
I used to like Mackenzie, but I really don't like it at all now. *shrug*

Dakota - don't like it for a boy or a girl. I just think it's a bad name. again *shrug*

I like the name Madison, I just think it's way too popular these days. Even tho it's my daughters middle name, and what we call her. :)

[identity profile] anapology.livejournal.com 2006-10-08 11:24 am (UTC)(link)
What is your daughters first name, & why doees she go by her middle name? :-) just being nosey!

[identity profile] sherball.livejournal.com 2006-10-08 02:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Rebecca. Which I LOVE, but hate the nicknames for.. She's named after her daddy. They have the same initials.

I figure Madison is cute for when she's little, and if she hates it when she gets older, then she's got a great first name to fall back on! hehe I know.. we're weird! ;)

[identity profile] anapology.livejournal.com 2006-10-08 07:51 pm (UTC)(link)
That seems really odd for me because I would never settle on a first name i didnt 100% love in every way, nicknames included. That's just me though, i'm a name obsessive!

[identity profile] sherball.livejournal.com 2006-10-10 03:52 pm (UTC)(link)
:) Sometimes life is a compromise. :) The compromise was that we'd use hubby's initials RMM. sooooo while I wanted names that had an Irish/English sound he wanted only Spanish names, most of which I don't like and the ones that I liked he HATED :( or are already being used in the family. Blah. So we both kinda got our ways.:)

[identity profile] anapology.livejournal.com 2006-10-10 04:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I really like the idea of using the fathers initials.
That's why my number one choice is AJM Amelia Juliet Madison. (madison being the last name in my case!)

[identity profile] sherball.livejournal.com 2006-10-11 02:06 pm (UTC)(link)
nope, right now we usually just call her madison. but sometimes when we are being silly we call her maddie, and some of my family calls her maddie :)

[identity profile] one-vice.livejournal.com 2006-10-08 04:28 am (UTC)(link)
Those are in my top 5 "Most Hated Names Ever" list.

[identity profile] angelovernh.livejournal.com 2006-10-08 07:07 am (UTC)(link)
I'd name a dog Dakota. Madison and Mackenzie are wayyyyyyy too common now for me to consider.

[identity profile] sherball.livejournal.com 2006-10-10 03:52 pm (UTC)(link)
have you found out the sex yet? I can't recall how far along you are atm :)

[identity profile] angelovernh.livejournal.com 2006-10-10 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Me? Nope, we find out 10/17- I hope! That's when the ultrasound is. I'm 19 weeks now.

[identity profile] anapology.livejournal.com 2006-10-08 11:21 am (UTC)(link)
I HATE THEM WITH A PASSION!

[identity profile] so-there.livejournal.com 2006-10-08 02:02 pm (UTC)(link)
are you for real?

[identity profile] sotypical42483.livejournal.com 2006-10-08 04:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't like any of them. I borderline hate all of them, actually. Trendy, trite, bland, and meaningless. They scream early millennium baby.

[identity profile] elsh.livejournal.com 2006-10-08 06:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Most common and trendy names of the 2000's.

[identity profile] scintillated.livejournal.com 2006-10-08 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Yuck to all of them.

[identity profile] neuraltube.livejournal.com 2006-10-08 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I think they are all cute but they are all too popular now. Maybe in a few years the frenzy will die down.

I have a friend whose kids are named Madison and McKenna, so there's a Mackenzie variant for you to chew on.

[identity profile] ciara-belle.livejournal.com 2006-10-09 03:51 am (UTC)(link)
I don't like any of them. They're super, super trendy, which I see as being different from popular. Popular is not bad. Trendy just has some negative connotations to me with regards to names.

Mackenzie is a last name. And, as has been mentioned, the prefix Mac-/Mc- means "son of", so as much as I dislike it for a boy's first name, I hate it for a girl's first name.

Dakota and Madison just sound silly and not "first-namey" to me.

[identity profile] thunderofsins.livejournal.com 2006-10-09 02:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't like any of them...although I did like all of them years ago, before they were so popular. I do have to say though...that if you want to use one of those names, please use the correct spellings and not throw in a few "y"s just for creativity!

[identity profile] lostrocket.livejournal.com 2006-10-19 08:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree with all the "hate because they're trendy".

But I still love the name Madison. I wouldn't use it (see aforementioned trendiness, also just that I have other names I like more), but I love it.
