Hi all!

I'm due Feb. 13th - my fiancee and I have been thinking of names now that we know we're expecting a little boy. :)

Thus far, we've been really set on the name Drake. We both like the meaning behind it (dragon, and namesake of Sir Francis Drake, who discovered the islands I grew up in, in the VI - we've also read that it means "male duck" lol).

So... what do you think of the name Drake?

Any recs for middle names? (Last name Reardon, so we're thinking a 3-syllable name might be the best - lol wow, so much analytical-ness goes into this. lol)

Thanks in advance - glad to be here!

I'm afraid my first reaction is "Dr Drake Ramoray! How ridiculous that character was!", which isn't helpful. (On the other hand, Friends might be half-forgotten by the time your son is old enough to care what anyone else thinks of his name.)

I don't think it's an ugly name at all, and it would go with your first name. Just make sure the middle name doesn't begin with U or E. :-)

Welcome & congratulations! :)

Here are some ideas:

Drake Addison ("son of Adam")
Drake Nicholas ("victory of the people")
Draka Zachary ("remembered by god")
Drake Elliot ("the lord is my god" - form of Elijah)
Drake Everett ("strong boar")
Drake Samuel ("asked of god")
Drake Oliver ("an olive")

*That should be Drake Zachary, of course :)

Drake is NMS. The only name that sounds "right" with the last name Reardon to me is Danny...thanks to a kid I went to school with. :)

For middle names I'd go with something more traditional since Drake is nontraditional.

Drake is more of a last name to me so I'm having trouble with it as a first name. If it was me, I'd probably make it a MN, but if that's what you want your kid to be called, here are some suggestions:

Drake Addison
Drake Elliot
Drake Nathaniel
Drake William

i like it! but my first thought is 'dr. drake ramora,' a.k.a. the soap opera character joey played on friends.

god, it is embarrassing that that was my first thought.

but i think the name Drake is completely adorable. it sounds nimble and grinning and flashy and cute. i'd date a Drake. ^_^

it could be worse, he could be named specifically and deliberately after a REAL soap opera character.

like my boyfriend, blake. was named after 'dr. blake carrington' on general hospital.

yeah, it's a pretty amazing icon. i wish i could take credit. :D

I like Drake. And I maybe watched two or three episodes of Friends so I don't make a connection to the character they're talking about at all. But in a few years when people have forgotten the show for the most part, it wont matter. It actually makes me think of Drake from the Nickelodeon show Drake and Josh, but that Drake happens to be pretty cool. Anyway, middle name suggestions:

Drake Sebastian Reardon
Drake Noah Reardon
Drake Adam Reardon
Drake Alden Reardon
Drake Alexender Reardon
Drake Everett Reardon
Drake Alan Reardon
Drake Ezra Reardon
Drake Frederick Reardon
Drake Gavin Reardon
Drake Malcolm Reardon

Yeah, I watched bits and pieces of maybe 3 episodes, but that's all =\ It was an all right show, but.. I like others better. :)

And you're welcome!

Everyone seems to be thinking of Friends but I think of Seinfeld... "HATE the Drake!"

The only three syllable guys name I can think of off the top of my head right now (sleep deprived though) is Jeremy. I like it depending on your accent... there are a lot of names that I only like in certain accents

I don't like Drake. It sounds like something out of a goth kid's RPG.

It does sound very soap opera, not just because of the Friends reference, but just because the name seems to have a dashing hero quality to it, either a soap star or a hero in a bodice-ripper novel.

It also makes me think of ducks.

But, I actually think it's pretty cool despite those two things. It's got a lot of good qualities to it too.

Drake Alexander was what first came to mind.

I love it! With that name, you need a strong middle name, like Thorston, or Alexander. Though Addison, as other suggested, works well too.

Congrats on the baby! Make sure to have a girl name picked out too, just in case. haha I've known a LOT of people who've planned on boys only to birth girls, and vice versa. :)

Yep! A lot of the time, a girl's vaginal area will be quite swollen in the womb, which *appears* to look like a penis. That's actually a lot more common than saying it's a girl and having it come out a boy.

I can't get past the fact that it is a male duck! I know WAAAAAY too many dogs named that because their owners are duck hunters. So, to me, it's more of a dog's name.

Though, if I try to picture a person with the name drake, I tend to think dark haired. Not sure why exactly...

I actually love Drake! I'm an avid Friends fan too, and yes I thought of Joey's Day's character, but I don't think it's an awful connection. There is always going to be someone on TV/Movies that will share a name with you... unless you're planning on naming your kid "Lucy Lou" or something to that extremeity, I don't think it's a big deal.

I like:
Drake Xavier
Drake Nathaniel
Drake Malachi
Drake Alexander
Drake Julian
Drake Tobias
Drake Adrian (this is my favorite)
Drake Gabriel

Drake Benjamin
Drake Sebastian
Drake Maciah
Drake Anthony
Drake Christopher

i, personally, LOVE the name drake & fully support you wanting to use it.
