this always annoys me
Sep. 20th, 2006 10:32 amthis has been driving me crazy since I had my baby. I love her name which is Nalani but whenever someone asks her name they look at me like I named her chia pet or something.
Like my car was recently wrecked so last night i went to an auction and I brought nalani with me. This lady was there with her baby and like people always do she comes up to talk. I ask what her daughter's name is and her baby's name was something like(Sha Nee qwee sah). I have no clue how she spelled it. But thats how it sounded. I just said Oh cause i dont like to say i like stuff i dont like. Then she asked Nalani's name and I said it slow like i always do..and she like everyone else gets this weird look on her face and says, "shoot i'm not even gonna attempt to say that" lol when it happened it pissed me off but now when I think of it..its kinda funny. but it always happenes to me..so when people ask I just say her name is Lani most of the time now.
I thought I was going nice and simple with my daughter's name..cause it's said like it is spelled and it's not a made up name. It was in all the baby books. It's also not as ghettofab as my name Tyquira (ty Queer Ah). But apparently I went all crazy like my mom did and she will be going around forever saying her name is Lani. Like i always have to say my name is Ty. Does anyone else with kids run into problems like that. My dad just had a baby and named him Dalton Brelin Ligon. But noone has a problem saying that. and it seems like a tongue twister to me.

Date: 2006-09-20 03:05 pm (UTC)I'm sorry, but I have to say I laughed at the other woman's baby's name. It reminds me of the part in Coach Carter where Ashanti's character is talking to her friends about the baby, and she says she likes Harmony as a name and they all agree, and then she says, "what about Shanequa?" and her friend says, "Shanequa? Girl, the ghetto called and they want their name back." Ty is a cute nn for you too. :)

Date: 2006-09-20 03:29 pm (UTC)Nalani doesn't seem like a problematic name at all. I don't understand people :/ I think it's quite pretty and not hard to pronounce at all. Don't worry about it!

Don't be ashamed of the name though.
Don't call her by Lani.. you named her what you named her for a reason.
Lani is a cute nickname but you should always introduce her as Nalani first.
Dalton Brelin Ligon is easy for me to say.
I've never had to deal with my sons name being pronounced wrong or anything, its kind of simple and easy.

Okay. That's... logical. =/
Really, I like your daughter's name. I love Hawaiian names, although I wouldn't use them.
