in relation to my post about last names as first... am I right that many of you believe Smith is a fine FIRST name for a boy??? I think it's terrible! I can't imagine anyone doing that to their kid.. "hey, let's go with that crappy last-names-as-first-names trend.. oh, I know, let's pick the single most common last name in existence! our son will love it!"

I believe you said names that weren't barf worthy, so they may not like it but they could live with someone having the name.
A few of the names you listed were legitimate first names.

There are a lot of last names that would make good first names and could work in the right situation. I don't mind the trend very much.

I was just pointing out that your wording could have affected the outcome.
Not saying I would use it, but from what I'm reading, Smith is a legitimate first name as well.

You seem to be getting an attitude for absolutely no reason. I am agreeing with you that it isn't a good name.

there's actually a semi-celebrity out there, smith puget. brother of afi's lead guitarist, jade puget. i think their names are reasonably ok.

I'm probably alone in this opinion, but I love last names as first names, for boys anyway. And I think Smith is a fine name. :)

I think I'm the only one who agrees with you.
I like last names as first names.

i also like last names as first names. a few of my favorite boy names: laurence, bennett, elliot.

my grandmother's maiden name was laurie, and they gave it to my mom as her first name. i love that tradition! i wish my last name was a realistic first name, because i would pass it down as well.

Funny, I was just thinking about this today. I think Smith is a ridiculous name, for the same reasons as you. As if last names as first names wasn't random and meaningless enough, they had to pick Smith. It's like saying to the child "You are completely generic and boring and unoriginal." I also don't see the point in naming people after obsolete occupations.

Haha. I remember in high school, we were given a period in the library to study for history, but I stumbled across this naming trends book (perhaps where my interest in names began?)
It was from America and it documented naming trends throughout history, and it had this one page that was devoted to funny first names given to people with the last name of Smith, taken from records from one particular year. There were lots of funny names (e.g. Last Smith), but there were a lot of people who were called Smith Smith. Sigh...

Smith is a terrible first name. It was ridiculous on Sex and the City and it's even more ridiculous in real life!

I think people saw it on Sex and the City and thought it was cool. I hate it and I agree, it's stupid. I hate almost all last names on kids.

Smith is fine and 473289573289573289x more respectable than something like Jaidyynn or Skylar. I don't think it's trendy in the least. It's been around forever.
