Hepzibah Keziah Sara Rachel Delilah Eve / Eva ? Agnes Abigail Leah Rebecca ? Tabitha Magdalene Martha
Those are all the ones which I can place where they definitely come from, as opposed to being associated with the bible, eg Christian, or a feminisation eg Joanna, Michelle etc.
Eve Rachel Leah Dinah Adah Sarah Athalia (Daniel's Egyptian wife) Deborah Jemima (daughter of Job) Karen (daughter of Job) Kezia (daughter of Job) Mara Michal (David's first wife) Rebecca Ruth Sharon Talitha (resurrected child. This word is Aramaic for little girl, so it may not have been her name, but rather what Jesus called her when He said,"arise, little girl."
New Testament: Anna Bethany Berenice (Bernice in new translations) Dorcas (translated Tabitha) Elizabeth Joanna Susanna Lois (Timothy's grandma) Martha Pheobe Priscilla Salome
I'm not religious in the slightest, but he bible is a good source of names! Some of the female names mean really horrible things though... ahhwell these are my favourite:
I'll do my best. I am only looking amoungst names from the Torah for my future kids. I would have more suggestions for you if I were home with my Hebrew baby name books :) Sarah Rebecca Rachel Naomi Ruth Yael Eve Hannah Abigail Miriam Mara Hagar Michal Ada Leah Tamar Dinah Bilhah Zilpah Bathsheba Delilah Deborah/Devorah Elisheva Kezia Zillah Naamah Orpah Penina Rahab Judith Tzipporah
Also, I recently saw the name Shulammite for a baby girl at our local hospital. It's also from the Song of Songs: "Return, return, O Shulammite. Return, return that we may gaze upon you." It can also be spelled with one M. I really love it.
in song of songs, the woman is named shumalite, but it's a bad translation. a more proper translation is solyma (so-LEE-ma) which is the feminine of solomon. i think it's beautiful! *shrug* :)
also, not used as a Biblical name in the Bible, but the hebrew word for "lily" is shoshannah, which i think is also beautiful.
solyma or shoshannah? :) no, it's not. i first heard about solyma from charles spurgeon's sermons, and shoshannah just from my hebrew name interest. but i have heard of delirious!
This isn't meant to be at all offensive, but I just find it quite curious that if you could only think of one Biblical name off the top of your head, it would be Esther. Surely it would be Eve, or Mary? I thought they would be the most well-known ones.
It's fine :) I knew some of the obvious ones (Mary, Eve, Sarah), but I think flipping through it, Esther has a book in the Old Testament. I guess I wasn't clear but I meant the less obvious names, and everyone came up trumps.
