How do you pronounce the name Anais? I've never known anyone named that, and I've encountered various forms of pronunciation in books/websites, so I'm a bit confused.

An-ay-iss in English; in French as [livejournal.com profile] tokossel indicates.

I have always heard it Uh-nye-iss, like Anias Nin.

Jewel: "You can be Henry Miller and I'll be Anais Nin / except this time it'll be even better, we'll stay together in the end..."

Wikipedia entry on Anaïs Nin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anais_Nin) confirms it's ana-EESE

(ah-nah-EECE if you are saying it slowly, syllable by syllable, but more like ah-nye-EECE when you say it quickly.)

(Final syllable rhymes with peace, not peas)

I've always heard a-nye-us but then again I live in the south where everything gets mispronounced.

Is that an accent thing? I can't follow how the NYE sound would ever come out.

You didn't think I was saying I was emphasizing the second syllable, did you? I'm definitely emphasizing the third, just as you are.

Do you actually pause between the second and third syllable, or does the second sort of glide into the third? Mine glides, and that is what I am trying to get at - that when you say "ah" and "ee" consecutively and quickly, it sounds like "eye".

hmm... well, ok I just said it about 20 times in a row out-loud to see what would happen. Sort of... lol, I sound like an idiot here talking to myself. "ah-ee, ah-ee, ah-ee." I sound like a donkey.

Some names don't have obvious pronunciations, so one must ask. It's not as if she asked how Hayfsdnxcndixjj should be pronounced. Sheesh.

Heh heh. I guess you can think of it as being similar to the AI in Hawaiian or lanai - everyone says huh-WYE-un and luh-NYE instead of pronouncing the A and I separately.

Me too, but I'm in Canada, where we pronounce everything our way.

She's allowed to inquire as to how to pronounce it, whether she ends up thinking of using it or not.

I've only heard it pronounced out loud once, and it was said ann-eye-eess. But I've no idea how it's meant to be pronounced.
