My birth name is that of an Enid Blyton character... which is what happens when you tell a five year old that she can name her new baby sister.

Has something like this happened to anyone here or anyone you know of?

My mom was named after a heroine in a romance novel her mom couldn't remember the title of. My parents named me after a historical figure, but if I had been a boy they were planning on using Doyle as a middle name, after Arthur Conan Doyle.
However, my husband's middle name is after an ex boyfriend my MIL had in high school, which I always found to be a bit sketchy!

Personally, I absolutely love it when I hear that someone was named after a fictional character! I'm a youth librarian, and I especially love it when someone says "Oh, I named my child Matilda/Charlie/Clementine/whatever after my favorite book from school" or something like that. Totally makes my day. :)

I'm a youth librarian too and I feel the same way! In fact, a family friend just named her daughter Eloise and I cannot get over how awesome I find that :0)

Oh, I love love love Eloise! Both the name and the series. It's on our list (Imogen Eloise), and your friends are completely awesome.

I named my 3 year old son Jonas from The Giver. It was my favorite book growing up(still one of my favorites) and I knew I HAD to use it for one of my children. No one else gets excited about it like I do. :D

You are actually the second person I've encountered with a Jonas, named from _The Giver_! That is so incredibly awesome! :)

my Godson was almost named for my aunt's ex boyfriend. I think my grama talked her out of that.

my hsuband found out when he was 22 that he was named for his mom's first husband (his middle name is the guy's first name). no idea his mom was even married before. that guy died, though, so there's a difference.

A friend from HS picked her step sister's Elena's name when we were 18. She got it from the Vampire Diaries.

As for fictional characters I know two girls through a dance studio 7 & 9 called Storm and Rogue, parents are X-men fans.

Also know a 4 yr old Hermione, which I love.

I would totally name a kid after a fictional character. The problem with it though is I cycle through phases quickly and often, so right now I may love the name Kate because it's my favorite Castle character, soon enough my Castle obsession will be gone and I probably won't love the name as much as I once did.

yeah I know a lady who named her kids Mick and Keith after the, uh, rolling stones or something? she regrets it now, lol.

I am in two minds about it:

On the one hand, being a librarian/bookworm I get an inner squee when told that someone is named after a book.
On the other hand, I dislike it when a name is intrinsically and solely linked to that book/film/song, e.g. Aragon, Legolas, Peeta, Starbuck

I guess "real" names that are also used in books are awesome, but I'm a bit *sideeye* when the name is only linked to the book and was invented by the author.

All that said, my elder sister is named after the main character in What Katy Did. However I'm glad said sister wasn't allowed to name me, or 3 yr old her would have called me Sooty.

I have to ask, of course: what do you make the name Wendy? Has enough time passed since its invention or would you still sideeye it?

Date: 2014-08-12 11:27 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] wolf-shadow.livejournal.com
Wendy is one of those names that was common enough for me before reading the book, and that definitely surprised me to find out it was made up. So yeah, no sideeye :)

I admit, like everyone, I have distinct double standards, lol :P

Fair enough! Hehe. Was just curious as when it comes to made up names that have come into common usage it's the first one that springs to mind.

I know an Ethan Starbuck, and I've always found it dashing. Parents were historians, and Starbuck is actually a common surname on Nantucket with a lot of history behind it. (Ha, Melville actually did some research!)

I can remember hearing that a sister was allowed to name her little sister when she was around five. She chose Pepper.

A friend I went to school with was eight when her little brother was born and her parents said she could name him, so she went with Matthew. Good choice for an eight year old girl! Wise choice, too.

I'm rather fond of the name Sigourney. You've all heard of Sigourney Weaver I imagine. Well, she's actually a Susan. She named herself after a minor character from The Great Gatsby.

My niece is named Arwen (after a certain elf characters from Lord of the Rings)-- and my nephew, her little brother, is Luke.... Mainly so my brother can say that famous line about being his father. LOL.

I really love both names though, and they have non-related-to-anything middle names (Isabella, Alexander) so I, personally, do not have a problem with it. It makes a good story.

Funny thing about that quote - Vader doesn't say "Luke, I am your father"; he says "No, I am your father."

But I do love Luke and I actually really like Arwen for a little girl.

I'm pretty sad to admit that I don't know anyone who named their child after a character. I guess there could be people who just won't admit it mind you :p

I generally prefer the thought of naming after characters, but I bloody love the name Bruce for any potential sons and its mostly for a certain Dr Banner :D I also really like Spencer after another Dr, Dr Reid from Criminal Minds :p

When I worked for an OB, we had a British couple who named their first daughter Harriet. When they became pregnant gain, they found out they were having another girl. Harriet began called the baby Henrietta because her favorite book was Harriet and Henrietta, something about ducks. It stuck and they named baby #2 Henrietta.

I don't know anyone with book names or anytyhing. I named my daughter after my favorite band of all time and our second daughter(if we have one) will be named after my husbands favorite book.

We almost named our daughter AryaLynn instead of BeauLynn but then the show came out and we knew it'd go crazy. My husband has been a huge fan of the book since middle school(he's 30 now).

Pronounced Avon-lee

Not after characters that I can think of, but my friends' preschooler, Diego (Mexican background, NOT the stupid books!) named his little brother Max - and this was from the time that he was still in the womb.

My nephew got to choose the name for the family cat, and he called her Jya (rhymes with Maya). I thought it was neat.

If my brother had had my way, I would have been Sara Lee, but my parents put their foot down, which I am very grateful for.

My cousin just had her second child, and her three-year old daughter was hoping for Toola-Roola, which they jokingly called the baby until she was born. She went with Natalie instead.

All of my kids are technically named after fictional characters, or at least I got the names from fictional characters.
My first son is named Harvey from Sabrina the Teenage Witch. Long before I had kids I had the TV on as background noise while drawing and I just heard the name "Harvey" a bunch of times and thought to my self "You know, I really like that name!" So it stuck with me when I had kids later on.
My second is named Luna. I'm a big fan of Both Harry Potter and Sailor Moon. I originally wanted to name her Harriet from Harriet the Spy(huge favorite) but Harvey + Harriet was too matchy and I couldn't think of anything else I really like so I went with Luna. I do have a personal story that led me to picking the name but I also liked it because of the connection to the characters.
My youngest is named Jonas from the book The Giver. It was my favorite book when I was a kid and is still one of my top favorites.

Now that they're older they like to watch the shows that have their names in them. There's a Sabrina cartoon with Harvey in it and they both love Sailor Moon and Harry Potter. Now there's also My Little Pony with the character named Luna that my daughter loves too.

I love Sailor Moon and loved the names Serena and Darien, from the English dub. I think I could get away with Serena, but not Darien, lol.

I did persuade my husband to name his female Shepherd character on Mass Effect Serena, though. It turned out to be an ironic name, because he's playing her as a complete badass bitch, lmao.

My brother was born when I was 3 and my sister was 5. My parents said we could choose his name; she liked Brian and I liked Egon (after the Ghost Buster in the green jump suit in the cartoon). They went with Christopher Brian, lucky for him, LOL. My two favorite male middle names are Atticus from To Kill a Mockingbird and Shaw, after Colonel Robert Shaw who lead the 54th Massachusetts Infantry in the Civil War and whose life and work turned into the movie Glory. I think it's a cool thing to do, but if the name were too "out there" I might reserve it for the middle spot.

I don't have any kids, yet, but more and more I find myself loving the name Annelies for a girl. The problem is that I'd end up wanting to call her Anne, but nobody would be able to pronounce it correctly (Ahn-uh).

I'm named after a Jem and the Holograms character, which is what happens when your sister watches a show and your parents decide they really like one of the names on it.

I know a guy whose middle name is Wile, after the coyote.

I know an older (40's) very conservative lady who's uncle is the riest of my Catholic church, and I was surprised and somewhat horrified to find out her 7 year old son's name (Logan) is after wolverine because she has a thing for hugh jackman. I later found out her daughter sabrina was named for the audrey hepburn movie of the same title.

I have a son Linus and I always get people asking about the peanuts character but nope, I just liked the name a lot.
