What do people think of the girl's name Frances as a first name?

We want to honour my grandfather who was Robert Francis but my partner does not like Roberta.

Not a huge fan of either to be honest. Obvious nick name is Frannie which I dislike.

Other ways to honor someone: same initials, months/flowers/birthstones (considered the middle name May as it was the month a loved one was born, or if the birth month flower is a Lilly, etc), or choosing a name with a similar meaning.

If he went by Bert you could use Birdie. I think that would be an adorable middle name.

My best friend's name is Frances. She has never met another one, and has adopted the nn "Franny" by free will. Everyone used to call her Frances, but then she started to request to be called "Fran" or "Franny". Totally by choice.

I think Frances is much better than Roberta.

I think it's a totally fine thing to do. Frances lends itself well to nicknames; Fran, Franny, Franki, etc. I say go for it, and though I'm not the biggest fan of Frances, I *MUCH* prefer it to Roberta.

I have co-worker that named his daughter Frances. She's the cutest little thing and it just fits her perfectly.

Love it! I love how some of the older names are making a comeback and this is a particularly cute one IMO. I like Frankie or Cissy as a nn.

Love Frances for a girl! Francie is a great nickname too. I don't like Roberta - it seems like it's too obvious an attempt at feminizing a boy's name.
