i met a little girl named mercer the other day. my first thought is the street in soho, nyc, which i used to live near. its not going on my list or anything, but aside from the street attachment, i like it.

the pronunciation is murr-sir, sort of, in case anyone doesnt get it.

thoughts?

It sounds like a car. Like a Toyota Mercer.

Reminds me of the children's book author... something Mercer.

I can only think of a mercer, so it's a bit weird IMO.

it reminds me for some reason of a girl i knew growing up named clemency. i don't know why it triggers that memory though.

wow, her name was Clemency? like as in being merciful? was she horrid and judgemental to others? bc that would be ironic.

really though, that one just struck a chord with me today as being a strange name. what did you think of it when you knew her (or now for that matter)?

well, when i was 7, i didn't know it was a WORD. it was just her name. i guess the good thing about naming your kid a "big" word is they probably won't be teased for it for a good few years, since the other kids won't know what it means, and by the time they do, they'll be used to hearing it as a name first. but i remember hearing my mom saying what a strange name that was and not understanding why. it was just as much a name to me as Jessica. :P now that i'm older, i STILL feel like it's okay for a name, even though other words like that are AWFUL names to me.

oh, and she was my friend, but she WAS a horrible child. a VERY spoiled only child who was definitely NOT merciful. eek.

yeah, that's a good point (about hearing everyday so it was as much a name to you as anything else). I guess it's the same as some names that people don't care for, but if you've known someone with that name it seems to 'fit' bc you're used to it.

ha. see? point made about names that have the meaning of/are associated with certain traits. ;p

It's ok. Too surnamey for my taste I think though. Reminds me of Mercer Island, near Seattle.

I have an aunt named Merces. It reminds me of that.

It makes me think of Mercer Mayer. :(

Could it have been a weird nickname for Mercedes?

it's my friend's maiden name, so it sounds too last name-ish to me.

Mercer University (http://www.mercer.edu) is all I can think of.

I live near that street. And Waverly as well, which I've heard as a name. I like them both, but mostly for the association.

Mercer doesn't really roll off my tongue very well. I do like the name Mercy, it's not really my style, but I like it.

yeah i went to nyu so i have the street association plus the fact that i had classes in a building called mercer. i am not sure how i like it aside from those associations anyway. it's kind of harsh sounding. and it rhymes with itself. lol
