My best friend's 4 month old is named Ophelia Violet [2 syllable last name]. At first I thought it was a little odd, but it fit mom and dad's style so it made sense to me. Besides, now that we've met her, I can't imagine her having any other name. It's so beautiful, and I think it will age very well.
I'm not as sure about Odette. It sounds more like a nickname to me.
Odette is NOT a nicname, it is a beautiful french name. My poodle who I owned from when I was five years old was named Odette after Swan Lake, she passed away last year and it will always be a very special name to me.
We used nicknames Detta and Dette ... I think both Ophelia and Odette are beautiful, classic names.
I don't think it's a nickname either. I love the name, it makes me think of the Swan Princess and Swan Lake. It sounds feminine to me without being overused. I think it's classy enough that it will age well. I'm just worried about the back to back "eh" sounds (od-EH-tte and EH-vans). But it doesn't bother me too much.
I don't like Odette if you're in the U.S. It seems made up(even though it isn't) and I can hear Oddette now. It may go over better in another country. Ophelia is pretty but I have a bad association. It also makes me think of an older woman.
Middle names I think would sound good with either, though: Marie Madeline Paige Sophie Noelle Elise Christine Katherine
I am in the US. :) I never even thought of "Odd"ette. That's why I post here, because everyone helps me see things I could never think of. I have never heard of anyone named Ophelia before, so I'm hoping nobody I know has a bad association. :| I'm kinda leaning towards that one!
Odette is pretty but I'd see it being mispronounced and spelled a lot. Ophelia has been on my list but always vetoed by the husband. I think the names have a simple classic beauty to them.
I'm starting to think the same. I'm thinking it might be "oddette" and I don't know if I like that. Ophelia is nice and girly sounding, Why does your hubby veto it? Does he ever say why he doesn't like it?
I don't think Odette will be misspelled that often. Even if people aren't familiar with the Swan Princess/Swan Lake, it's spelled exactly the way it sounds.
...however, I am underestimating people. Melissa is a common American name yet my name is spelled in all kinds of ways, and I have never met anyone named Melissa who spells their name in any of those ways.
