A theory...

Do some people become more partial to unusual or creative names when they actually have kids themselves? I remember before I was pregnant my husband and I used to talk about baby names and he said he liked the name Jonah. I hated it at the time and even said things like: "no way will I ever name a child that, what did the child do to me?", but when I fell pregnant and found out we were having a boy I decided that I did like it. We now have a son named Jonah and I have no regrets about our choice of name.

Also, I remember when Ashlee Simpson and Pete Wentz had a son named Bronx Mowgli and I was all like " WTFBBQ, what kind of a middle name is Mowgli?", and now I think it's a possible middle name if we have another boy one day.

Did anyone else's taste in names change or broaden when they had kids or is it just me? If you have any examples, post them here.

I think for me it was more the opposite. "This is actually going on a real person" was my reality, rather than a hypothetical person. Granted, our name is a bit 'different' but not uneek. Well, I'm in Australia and it's more different in Australia than The US, I believe and more along the lines of Jonah/ Bronx than something like... oh, I don't know, something totally made up. Happy to tell you via PM if you're curious.

Before our son was even conceived we had his name picked out. Right after he was born I suddenly wanted to name him after my husband or Castiel on Supernatural. But even though husband was on board we kept his name Wesley. Before I didn't want to name him after my husband because I only want one kid and naming is the best part lol! I think it was a hormone thing.

I think they have found that younger parents tend to go for the made up or creative stuff and older parents tend to go for traditional, historic or conservative names. They also found that people with more conservative politics go for the creative stuff and liberals go for more conservative names.

I always liked really common names (I initially wanted Charlotte for a girl, Andrew for a boy), but my husband was one of four Davids in his high school graduating class of forty students, and he would in no way agree to any name in the top 100, much less the top 10. So I had to change my tune a little. I agreed to a less common name, but it couldn't sound weird and made up. We have two boys now, Grady and August (nn Gus) and I love both names so much more than Andrew. I'm complimented on their names all the time and they really fit their personalities. So yes, I changed as I got older. But I still don't love completly youneek names, just less common names.

I remember thinking the name Nathaniel was weird when I was in high school, yet, 17 years later this is what we named our son and I can't imagine him sporting any other name. Catherine was not even on my top 30. I think that even though my spouse is younger than me is uber conservative ways have rubbed off on me. My younger self would have named her children Gaston and Ermenegilde ... I think its best this way lol

Grady is my cousin's name and I've always thought it was a great name. I LOVE August as well.

My name choices tame when I'm naming actual humans, but I still prefer unusual names.
