What do you think of the name Ida on a little girl? At first I thought it was a little too old-fashioned but it's starting to grow on me. Also, do you think it will become popular in the near future, given it's proximity to Isla?

That was my thought. I like a lot of traditional names, but there are a select few that I just can't bring myself to like. This is one of them. And Bertha. OH, Bertha.

Yeah, for me that's Gertrude. Bertha as well. Or Golda, which was a name my husband had suggested since it's jewish (which he is) but all I can imagine is a little nana playing Mahjong.

I like it especially if her last name is going to be long so it will balance out. It is so hard to tell which names are going to get popular. It just takes one movie, book or song and boom something like Renesmee starts becoming popular.

I think of an elderly German woman I knew when I was little--her name was Ida. I guess it could work, but that association is very strong for me.

I was reading an article or blog or something somewhere which basically said, the trouble with avant-garde names is, if your child is socially confident and can "work it", then an avant-garde name will make them even more awesome and memorable, but if your child has any problem at all with awkwardness, shyness, etc, it's going to be twice as bad. Basically, it's like a flashy edge of fashion dress that they cannot take off, whether they are wearing that dress like "Boom, bring it!" or like "eeeee hide."

Ida has a lot in common with Isla and other hits like Ava and Emma, but it has a somewhat harsher sound (because [d] is a stop, phonetically, rather than a nasal, glide or fricative) and it lacks touchstones. By touchstones I mean like, "think of a famous X" or "what does X make you think of". Isla makes people think of islands which many people associate with romance and beauty. Ava has Ava Gardner, Emma is a book by Jane Austen, etc. Now what does Ida make you think of? In the North American context, for most people, nothing, except probably a vague "old people" idea.

That's a good point re: a name working as either an accessory to awesomeness OR a hindrance, depending on the temperament of the child. Kind of sucks that I can't tell what this kid will be like, personality-wise, until she's out in the real world (I don't think her kicking the crap out of me is that much of an indicator of outgoingness).

It makes me think of Laura's friend in Little House on the Prairie - which for me is a good thing. It's old fashioned for sure but still pretty. I could see it coming back in a big way like Ava/Eva/Iris.

I can't really see it getting that popular, but who knows. Names follow trends I don't always get. It's pretty, I think. I can picture it on someone born now.

Ida sounds like it could become more popular (similar, maybe, to Ava, Isla, etc.), but I doubt it'll become super-trendy.

Yeah, google tells me Ore-Ida was named due to the company's proximity to the Oregon-Idaho border.

It's a good name, and even better in English speaking countries due to it being way less common than it is here in Norway. It's been one of those top 20 names for like 15 years now so it's everywhere. We say it Ee-da though, so it's a bit different. I would personally never use it but that's due to the popularity of it here.

I love the name Ida. My 25 year old cabbage patch doll came with the name Ida Adriana. I still have and adore her so the name has really lovely connotations for me.
