Um...

A friend's niece- Ceallaigh (pronounced Kayley, in spite of silly phonetic rules).

what the hell? in what universe is that "Kayley"? Yikes.

Honestly, this one is almost unpronounceable. Like, I have NO idea where to start.

Looks like they messed up on both Céilidh and ALL the spellings of Kaleigh / Kayley / Caley.

Nil point ;)

Looking at it I was going with SEAL-Lay-ugh. Maybe SEAL-LAY. Kayley? Nope. Not even close.

At least caelleigh would've been guessable lol.

It looks faux-Irish. Like they were going for Caoilainn (Kaylen) but needed to unique-ify it.
Blergh.

[identity profile] virtue.livejournal.com 2013-12-17 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
It is actually Irish and correctly spelt.

[identity profile] imamaryanne.livejournal.com 2013-12-18 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
Is it? Well, my Google-fu totally failed on me, because I looked it up before posting that just to make sure I wouldn't sound like an idiot. I probably misspelled in in Google, so joke's on me :)

Thanks for letting me know.

Ceallaigh is the Irish Gaelic surname equivalent of "Kelly". I don't see a problem with it!

hmm, wonder if the parent knew this or if their special snowflake spelling just happened to be a real last name?

OMFG

I was going to say...this looks like a legit Gaelic name to me. I don't see what's wrong with it, though I can already foresee the problems of using it in an English speaking country.
