extremely belated birth announcement
Nov. 9th, 2013 02:23 pmSo uh, about three months ago I had another baby.
Mary-Alice Edith is a little sister for Philippa Jamie (nickname: Pippa or Pip). She is mostly called Mary-Alice, but sometimes just Mary, just Alice, or Mim (or Mad Madam Mim when she's cranky).
Mary Alice (no hyphen) was my grandmother's name, and my husband has aunts named Mary and Alice, so it's a family name on both sides. She was born on August 9th which is the feast day of St. Edith Stein, whom I admire.
We decided to use the hyphen because it makes it more obvious that her name is double barrelled, in contexts like school and so on.
The main runners-up were Josephine and Beatrice.

Date: 2013-11-10 07:01 pm (UTC)Can I ask about Alice, are you getting a lot of negative comments? It is currently our front runner, and I've been kind of scared at the number of ugly comments I've gotten about it. (Old lady name, contains word "lice", spinster name, dowdy, etc.) I'm kind of shocked at the number of people who seem to hate Alice!
(I'm in a conservative state in the US, though.)

Date: 2013-11-10 07:21 pm (UTC)Pippa gets tons of enthusiasm though from all age groups, and so does Mim. I like spunky nicknames.
Isn't it odd how the more conservative, the more likely they are to pick untraditional names (like Sarah Palin's kids) whereas the liberals are picking Elizabeth and James? Baby Name Wizard has studied this extensively, it's a real phenomenon.
