[identity profile] p-inkjeans.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
This has come up in a couple of posts over the past couple of days and now I'm interested. Are there any names that you'd consider naming your child after a literary character? I don't mean wanting to name your daughter "Jessica" and by coincidence, you happen to love a book with a character named Jessica. I mean that you never would have considered it, but you love that character so much that you'd use the name.

Boys
Atticus - To Kill a Mockingbird
Phineas (Finny/Finn) - A Separate Peace
Holden - Catcher in the Rye
Salinger - OK, not a literary character, but after JD Salinger (and I'd only use it as a middle name, DON'T WORRY)
Simon - Lord of the Flies [haha, I know, he dies and he turns into kind of a wuss, but in the beginning of the book he's my favorite character]
Huck - The Adventures of Huck Finn
Nick - The Nick Adams stories (Hemingway)

Girls
Scout - To Kill a Mockingbird (I know this one caused controversy because it's not her REAL name, but while I love Scout, I hate the name Jean for a girl and therefore could NEVER name my daughter Jean Louise. Louise is a middle name possibility though.)
Siddalee (Sidda) - Divine Secrets of the Ya Ya Sisterhood
Harper - OK, not a literary character, but after Harper Lee
Judith - once again, not a literary character, but after Judy Blume (I hate the name Judy, so I'd use the long version, and only as a mn since Judith is too long of a name for a 4-year-old without a nickname)
Caroline - Divine Secrets of the Ya Ya Sisterhood
Genevieve - " "

I would never name my child anything obvious like Atticus, Holden, Salinger, Huck, etc. The literary connotations are just too high and I feel like people who use those names are trying to sound really intellectual and well-read. =/

I agree. I especially wouldn't name my child Holden because, well, frankly I hated that damn book. HAHA

My first daughter will be Anne, after Anne of Green Gables.

I like Elinor from Sense and Sensibility,
Emma
Nick from the Nick Adams stories by Hemingway. I also like Nick because of Nick Carraway, the narrator in The Great Gatsby.

Jake from The Sun Also Resises. It also made me a fan of Brett for a girl.
Ilse from Emily of New Moon by LM Montgomery.
My husband likes Sebastian Dangerfield from Donleavy's The Ginger Man.

I know this might not count but my first son will be John after John Adams. He was a real person, but I began to love him after reading the David McCulloch book.

I'd honestly name a kid Wavey after the character of the same name from The Shipping News. I know it's a weird name, but she's such an amazing character. That book had such an impact on me, I almost wanna say I'd name my kid Annie after Annie Proulx. In Wyoming they name girls Skye. In Newfoundland it's Wavey...

I'd absolutely name a child Anne after the one from Green Gables, too. =)

I didn't like the Shipping News novel, but loved the movie, and love the name Wavey in consequence. And I'm a HUGE Anne fan!

I love Little Women. I would DEFINITELY name a girl Louisa after Louisa May Alcott, and I would use Josephine as a middle name as well.

Mine are like others.

I'm sure I have tons that I can't think of right now, but off the top of my head:

Harper (obvious, same as yours, but this one is like, borderline on a real list).

Tess & Cullum from James Clavell's Tai Pan

The names I love from books aren't necessarily really 'out there,' but I probably would never have come up with them if it weren't for the characters.

Maximilian - Rebecca
Sebastian - Twelfth Night
Gilbert - Anne of Green Gables
Madoc - A Swiftly Tilting Planet
Arthur - That guy with the round table, y'know?

Alice - Alice in Wonderland
Virginia - The 10th Kingdom
Meg - A Wrinkle in Time
Nimue - Arthurian legend
Kaylee - Firefly (okay, not a book, but still /brilliant/)

Oh, I'm sure there are others, but that's what springs to mind immediately.

Hehe, Arthur will be my first son's MN, but after his daddy.

All of the literary names people come up with are all the same. Scout, Atticus, Holden, Harper... like everyone read the same required reading and never anything else or something.

I like Avocet - Bird's real name - in Before Women Had Wings by Connie May Fowler; Sarah, for the narrator in This is My Words, by Nancy E. Turner; Emma, for Ursula Hegi's The Vision of Emma Blau; Maggie and Rose, for the sisters in Jennifer Weiner's In Her Shoes; Victoria from Judy Blume's Summer Sisters; Emily, for the protagonist in L.M. Montgomery's trilogy...lots more :-)

Pride and Prejudice is my all-time favorite novel, but I wouldn't name a girl Elizabeth, mainly because that's my middle name. I really like Georgiana, Lydia, Katherine (with Kitty as a nickname) and Louisa, though.

From Shakespeare, I like Helena, Lysander, Portia and Antonio.
