Couple of Professors names

One of my professors is named Katharine and her sister (who happened to be my boss at one point in my life) is named Rebekah.

Another professor in my major is named Trinh.  I thought Trinh was a man because according to the syllabus the name was Fred.  Turns out Trinh "Fred" is actually a woman!  Boy was I shocked and confused.

Is Trinh her last name? I'm confused. Is it just pronounced "trin" or more like "tryne"?

I've definitely heard Fred as a nickname for Fredericka/Frederique, and I've seen it in a book as a form of Alfreda too.
