A girl I used to work with has just had her first child, a little girl called:

Acacia

I like the fact that she went with something unusual but not made-up or silly, and it's a nature name, which is a plus. I don't think it rolls off the tongue that well though, and the child is going to have to keep correcting people with the spelling AND the pronounciation. Someone has already misspelled it Accica. WDYT?

I like nature names, so I approve. Pronunciation and spelling will definitely be difficult though. The kid could go by a nickname like Kay if need be.

Interesting, thanks ... it's like how Alicia can be Uh-LEE-see-uh or Uh-LEE-shuh.

I like it. I like the sound of it and I like a lot of nature names that aren't things like rainbow or apple or butte.

It is actually a fairly common name amongst us Hispanics, it's pronounced a-ka-see-a

Pretty. Not a common word as a name, but too out there. People who are misspelling a valid word for a plant? Guess they're not gardeners :P It carries connotations of "normal surburbia" for me too, probably due to the Acacia Avenue cliché ;)

There's a band called The Acacia Strain who I'm, uh... not a very big fan of so this just makes me think of them.
I feel like I would like it if I hadn't heard of them, though.

Its funny; I just mentioned this name to my family Saturday lol. I went to high school with an Acacia (ah-kay-sha) and I'm 37. Her brother's name was Chad, which she said was a tree name, too, but I've never seen a Chad tree. Mind you, Acacias are more shrub than tree. Anyway, I like it. The girl I knew said people never had problems with spelling or pronunciation, but she almost always had to explain she's named after a plant.

I want to pronounce it Ah-CAY-see-uh not Ah-CAY-shuh because of Acadia!

I don't hate it!

Some people do pronounce it that way; I have a college classmate who's name was Acacia and she pronounced it with four syllables.

I'm torn: part of me likes it, but the other part thinks it sounds too much like a skin disease if it's not being used in reference to a tree :-/

All in all, good on the mom for choosing a name that's not horrible or trendy or made up!

I went to school for years with an Acacia. It's not really a name that I would use, but I always liked that it was different, and she was the only one I ever knew with it, which is cool. Especially since it's an actual name. Unusual and cool. I do think it rolls of the tongue, though, and I never knew the girl I knew to have major problems correcting people.
