First post ever

Hello there,
I would just like to preface my post by saying that I am not currently pregnant or even trying to get pregnant, but just kind of obsessed with talking about names with my husband (who wants to start trying) because I like the idea of having the name already decided upon in advance for some reason! We already have a 14 month old called Henry John.

Its been bothering me because lately people keep saying "Oh! I know sooooooooo many boys called Henry". I don't want my son to have a "weird" name but I don't want to be "boring" either.

I feel CERTAIN that I would have a boy next time around. We like conservative, English, regal, traditional names (as you can tell, from Henry John). If we had a girl we'd probably call her Sarah Victoria.

I had my heart set on George but Kate & William went and took that, didn't they!?!

So now I'm settled on Arthur but hubby thinks its a little too "out there". Thoughts?

And I'm STUCK for middle names that go with it! I would LOVE some suggestions!!

Arthur sounds perfect for you - traditional but not common. It's definitely not "out there"

I think Henry and Sarah works well but Henry with George or Arthur sounds a bit matchy-matchy given both are names of Kings. There are other great traditional names that wouldn't sound like that. I'd maybe go with something like Benjamin instead.

George was on my list first and then they 'stole' it! I'm probably still going to use George- I won't be having a baby for probably 5+ years and I'm hoping the hubbub will have died down by then.

I know a first grader called Arthur and it suits him really well. He could also go by 'Art' instead. Arthur was also my late Grandfather's name who I never met but everyone says he was the kindest, sweetest man so I have a soft spot for it.

I think Arthur William sounds great and would fit in with your regal theme.

I have this thing where I don't like to name a child a name but then not have them be called that.

So I wouldn't use a longer name like Benjamin if there's no way they'll actually be called that on a day-to-day basis. I realise that boys especially have nicknames, but I'd still like them to know their name if that makes sense?

My inlaws are VERY big on nicknames (which I kind of hate) which is probably why I feel this way. Its why Henry was the perfect name!

Other regal names that comes to mind are Phillip, Charles, William, Alexander, Edward, James, Alfred[Alfie], Victor(if you like Victoria for a girl) and Thomas.

Arthur George fits your theme well. I think something like Alexander James would also fit, as they are classic and were top Kate & William bookie bet names. Its hard to find a regal name without any nicknames. Even Prince Henry goes by Harry.

As the mother of a 2.5-year-old Henry Leonard, we've been scouring our extensive family tree for suitable strong English-yet-Frenchifiable names (I'm francophone and pronouce his name "ahn-ree"). Some Arthurs from our family, with the following middle names:

Arthur Edward OR
Arthur Edmund (the writing isn't clear)
Arthur Joseph
Arthur Roderick

As for George, there's no reason you can't use it too. As long as hypothetical son isn't George Alexander Louis, you're good. :) These are also from my family tree:

I think that George is common enough that you don't have to give it up because Kate and William named their son that, but I do expect that it will shoot up in popularity in the next few years because of it. It's been slowly falling and is currently at #166.

I like Arthur. I don't think it's too far out there.
