[identity profile] ladysarahjane.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
I am currently 26 weeks pregnant and really struggling between two name choices for our girl. My son (who will be 2 next month) is Alexander Anthony. Alexander was chosen (to be frank) simply because it was the last name left after battling it out with my husband. Anthony is my great-grandfather's last name, grandfather's middle name, and my father's middle name, so it has a lot of family history.

I have two choices for a girl: Kaylee Jayne and Elizabeth Rose. I like Kaylee Jayne because its modern but not "too out there". Its out there, but not by much. Elizabeth Rose has family significance. Elizabeth is my little sister's middle name and Rose is my baby sister's middle name. I really like Kaylee Jayne but I really like Elizabeth Rose because of the family significance. If my son as a familial name, I would like for my daughter to have one as well. My mom's whole family is Finnish (and their names reflect that) and we just can't pull those names off. My dad's family tree can only be tracked back as far as my great-grandfather (LONG story). And I HATE my in-laws. (With a passion. Even my husband won't name our children after his family. I had wanted to name our son Harlow because it was my husband's middle name but he wouldn't have it because Harlow was a family name on his Mom's side. That's how much he is against naming our children against members of his family).

I've tried different mixtures of the two, but I think that that can be a mouthful for a little kid. I've tried writing out Kaylee Elizabeth Rose or Kaylee Rose Elizabeth, but I think that's a bit much. I also don't want to choose between Elizabeth or Rose because I have a feeling it will hurt someone's feelings (which I do not want).

We are only planning on having two children.

I really like both names and don't know which to go with. Thoughts?

I can't stand the name Kaylee. It sounds so "cutesy", and like the child isn't going to become an adult. Elizabeth is lovely and can certainly grow with a person. Plus, Elizabeth has a ton of nicknames to go with, which I like in a name. I think Alexander and Elizabeth sound so much better together than Alexander and Kaylee. From your reasoning, it sounds like you feel stronger for Elizabeth than Kaylee. Family names seem important to you, and you aren't getting that with Kaylee. The only reasoning you give for Kaylee is that it's modern but not too out there. Alexander Anthony is a pretty strong, traditional name, and I don't think Kaylee Jayne is the same. Elizabeth Rose is.

While Kaylee may sound cute for a baby it really doesn't age well as your daughter will grow up. I'd personally go with Elizabeth for this reason.

Kaylee is going to sound very, very dated in 20 years. Avoid.

Kaylee Jayne, especially with those particular spellings of each name, makes me immediately think of Firefly. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but a bit heavy-handed even for a Browncoat.

I much prefer Elizabeth Rose. A beautiful classic name. Kaylee is in Australia, a 'bogan' name, I just don't like the 'y' in the middle and it sounds made up.

I agree with all of this. Elizabeth > Kaylee anyday.

Elizabeth Rose. Family significance, sounds great with Alexander, has a million nickname possibilities if you don't want to be the millionth Beth or whatever is the hot nickname in your neighborhood, classic, never goes out of style, etc.

guess I'm the odd one out. I like Kaylee better. Maybe Kaylee Eliza Rose?

Elizabeth is so classic and timeless whereas Kaylee doesn't convey any of that. Paired with Alexander Elizabeth is a million times better.

Elizabeth Rose (though I prefer the spelling Elisabeth.)

it's not 'out there'. every other kid is named some variation of Kaylee these days it's cliche and really, really getting old. just go with the family name.

I actually really, really love Kaylee Elizabeth Rose. I think it flows beautifully, and has a nice mix of modern and classic.

I won't put my whole name up here, but suffice to say, mine is very long. (I only have one middle name, but it's a long one) My name is very long, and very...formal sounding, even my last name, haha. I never had any issues with it, personally, except for adopting a much more modern nickname with friends and some of my family because of how stiff my first name sounds.

Elizabeth Rose is BEAUTIFUL. Lizze Rose, Betty Rose if you plan on using both her names together, omg dying of cute! :D

I quite like Elizabeth Jayne together as well :)

I agree with pretty much everyone. I haven't watched Firefly so I don't get the association some of the others did, but Kaylee does leave a lot wanting in a name. It's overly trendy, but the spelling is not too out there to be considered cr8ive. However she would have issues with people spelling it right. I don't know if that would annoy you or not, it's just a factor to weigh in.

I like Elizabeth Rose, it has family meaning like Alexander. However, to be honest, it's too classic. It's very close to being boring, because there's no punch to it.

I know how hard it is to name your last child. It's awful. If you're as obsessed with names as I am anyhow. I finally stopped regretting other names I didn't get to use and fell back in love with my choice, but for a month I was sure I chose wrong, and for another month and a half I was seriously considering making a legal change. In the end I'm just a little sorry I didn't use two middle names. I would love to put Fleur in there. However it would be a hassle for a name nobody would really use so I have to get over it.

It is for that experience that I urge you to choose Kaylee Elizabeth Rose. You obviously love Kaylee and I think you would regret not picking something you LOVED, especially after settling on Alexander. I do not think that the double middle name works against her either, because you included both of your sisters and that makes it special. It's not too much of a mouthful. She'll mostly go by Kaylee Lastname so it won't be a problem. This is your last kid, make sure you make yourself happy.

The spelling of Kaylee might not be too cre8ive but pairing it with Jayne makes it so.

I agree that Kaylee is too overly trendy, I much prefer Elizabeth Rose. Pairs better with your sons name too

Oh yeah! I immediately thought of Jayne but had forgotten all about the character Kaylee. Yeah, I'd avoid that combo for sure.

I was thinking of how to combine Elizabeth and Rose too. Rosabeth! lol.

I like your advice and I agree. I'd avoid the Kaylee Jayne combo (especially with 2 Ys in it!) but Kaylee Elizabeth Rose would be lovely.

My last baby is Maelle Claire. We loved the name Maelle (my-ELL), but weren't sure if she'd love it. We figured she could go by Maya, Elle, Ellie, or even Claire if she didn't like Maelle, so we went for it (her sister also nicknamed her Mimi when she was a baby, so there's that too). She's only 6 but so far we still love love love it and so does she.

This is also true. Kaylee, Kaylie, Kayleigh, Kaleigh, Caileigh, Cailee. And then there's sound-alike names like Kayla, Kylie, Kyla, etc.

I am so sick of the Kaylees, Keillys, etc and the double y's in the name are annoying. Elizabeth Rose is such a beautiful name and matches the classicness of Alexander Anthony better than Kaylee Jayne.

In my little corner of the world (aka my school),one of the staff is named Kaylee. She even spells it like that or very close to that. I don't think of it as a young name when I consider her. Of all the trendy and creative names I hear announced at car line each day, I don't think there's another Kaylee.

Sorry for all the edits - just felt like I had to defend the name Kaylee after reading other comments. Elizabeth Rose will always be such a classic name to me. I know an almost 3-year-old with the name.

I really love Elizabeth Rose. It's a classic name with family significance that won't feel dated in 20 years or so, and there are so many amazing nickname options: Eliza, Ellie, Liza, Liz, Lizzie, Libby, Beth, Rose, Rosie, etc. I'm not a huge fan of Kaylee because it feels too trendy to me, but if you are really attached to the name, I don't think that Kaylee Elizabeth Rose sounds bad at all. It flows very nicely and would give her even more nickname options. I hope that helps. Best of luck to you. :)

This x100. You can call her "Ella" if you want to the trendy nickname, which is #12 on the Social Security List for 2012. She will have a wealth of options for nicknames when she is older.

I don't like the name Kaylee. It sounds like a nickname to me, and it also sounds like a child's name. I can't imagine it on an adult.

I love Elizabeth Rose.

I like Alexander Anthony, too. I had a friend from high school named Anthony Alexander (Alexander was his last name).
