great article! My favorite line "Don't abuse the letter y. It's not a real vowel. It's only a vowel when all the other vowels have been injured and you need to use the emergency third-string vowel."
I wish more parents would run names by this community. Its getting to the point where k, x, y, & z are taking over. Its fine if you pick a name with one of these letters, but don't invent a name so you can use one of these letters! The poor child. They are doomed to appear on Toddlers in Tiaras or be casted on a prime time reality show. Wish them luck on their resumes. Do they really want that life for their child?
I love that this article is in GQ. I like the names in Twilight. (except Reneesme.) Bella has been completely ruined for me. As long as you don't use Bella or Edward I think the other names are pretty solid. Alice and Jasper are cute names.
I've loved Jasper for a long time and I refuse to let Twilight ruin it. I think its less obvious than Edward and Jasper seemed like the only Cullen to have something I liked about him. IE. he tried to eat Bella XD
Edward is still useable. I think if you're going to name your children these names, Twilight shouldn't be the answer to where you got the name and what inspired you to name your child the same. For instance, Edward is my dad's middle name. Why can I not use it? Because of some lame book/movie, that I still haven't read/watched, made it inappropriate?
That article made me laugh quite a bit, but I do agree with the above commenter as far as it being fine to name a child for yourself, although my preference is for one name and not the whole name to be used. Still, I don't think it's awful to have a junior.
This is a great article and well written. I laughed all the way through. Someone should make this into a law here in the U.S. Well, all except naming a child after yourself. I think that's fine as long as you don't take it to the extent that George Foreman did.
But I shuddder to think of some poor soul reading this and deciding that threee lettters is an excelllent and trendeee thing to do. Pooor, pooor Jaxxxon and and Jazzzmyn.
This is a good article, but particularly the last point:
Are you giving this kid a one-of-a-kind name because you're fishing for cheap compliments? Do you want friends and family to be dazzled by your creativity? That's probably what's going on here, even if you can't admit it...So before you fill out that birth-certificate application, think hard about the person who's gonna be carrying around this name for life.
I think too many parents think of their child's name (and, quite honestly, their child) as an extension of their own creativity. They have to give the child something UNIQUE, something that expresses their vision and voice and personal sense of style. I think too many parents also think of their children only in the baby phase - and don't realize that this kid is going to be 42 years old someday, walking around applying for jobs and trying to get married. Can you imagine a 42-year-old Caylee or Branlee or Baylynn or Jaxxon? Those names are mildly entertaining on a 5-year-old, but not really on a middle-aged parent.
