[identity profile] smallandneedy.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames

Someone posted this video on facebook where a woman gets interview because she "can tell" if a child is good or bad by their name. She makes fun of parents naming their kids after a place, like Brooklyn or London, but when it gets pointed out that her daughter's name is India then that's totally different because she wasn't naming her after a place, she was giving her a lovely name for a lovely little girl.

Watch it and do share what you think. Judging parents for stupid baby names is one thing but judging children? They didn't choose their name.

I do judge the parents for giving their children horrible names, but I would never judge the child that's saddled with that name. Nor would I stop my child/ren from being friends with that child. If my child had a classmate named Chardonnay, I would definitely think the parents were less sophisticated, possibly less educated, but I wouldn't tell my child/ren to stay away from Chardonnay because her family is poor and ignorant, like this woman would.

(Just for clarity's sake, I would not think Chardonnay's family was poor and ignorant just because of what they named their daughter. I'm saying this woman would.)

This totally exploded all over my fb the other day as well.

I judge the hell out of parents for fugly names I don't like, but its not the child's fault. I know lots of people from lots of different walks of life and they all have varying standards of name giving. But again, just because I don't like a name, doesn't mean I would judge their abilities or personality.

They had her on This Morning a while back talking about tattoos as well. I wonder what she'd think of my name [I've been told Louisa is 'posh' by several people :/] and then I'd rock up with my tattoos and my potty mouth XD

THIS. It made me mad that she seemed to be blaming the child for the name, as well as limiting her kids' from interacting with kids with bad names. Because the kid totally picked their own name, right?

I'm with you, I would secretly roll my eyes at a child named Brookelynn-Neveah McKenzi Jaydyn Whatever, but I wouldn't assume the actual child was anything but lovely.

PS. Oooh, Louisa is 'posh'? Cool, it is on our list! You have an awesome name. :)

I knooow. Some names I'm just holding back the vomit, but its almost on a par with judging someone because of their race or gender. Anyone can be a dick whether they're called Margaret or Destiny.

Haha! Allegedly XD Thank you :D I think it doesn't suit me all that much but I was nearly Clare Louise. I know SO MANY girls named both of those, I'm glad my parents went with something just that little bit different. I've only ever met two Louisas my whole life and they've been people I've served in work :p

She is, quite frankly, a bigot. And proud of it. I judge, I admit it, but I DON'T do it either publically or about the actual person, only the name. Confirmation bias says yes of course she will only see bad people with those names, because it's what she is expecting to see... I wanted to go slap her after about, oooh, 30 seconds I think.

she's a bitch...I try not to judge, I do think "what were they thinking?" when I hear certain names
but, never judge the kid

I saw this, and the woman was a complete and horrible snob! I love that "legging clad mum" was used as an insult! ;) Also, had no idea Tyler was so bad in the UK. It seems pretty middle of the road in the US.

That said, I will grudgingly back her up on India. It has a huge tradition in British literature. If I met a little girl named India, I'd assume her parents were Anglophiles or she was named after a book character, and I don't group it into the same category as Brooklynn, Bostynn, Londyn, etc.

Re India - It does? Huh, not something I came across in school or university, but guess I studied different texts :)

From talking to other people around me, I can say that Tyler is viewed similarly to other profession and surname names - trendy and lower class-ish. But maybe the NW views it differently.

This woman is horrible. I really feel sorry for her children. Beyond the whole naming thing, WHY is she teaching her children that poor people are less than they are? There are very few names where I actively judge a parent for giving to their children. Mostly, I just assume I have one style, other parents have another style. My best friend named her son Brayden, which is among my least favorite names ever. But guess what? I love my friend and I love Brayden and my son is certainly allowed to play with him.
