girls names
Jun. 26th, 2013 08:46 pmThe husband and I cannot agree on any!
He has picked 4:
Corbynn (this was what we would have named our son had he been a girl. I am way over it)
Felicia -way dated and my grandmother's cats name.
Willow- honestly I love it but we both agree it has become too popular for our tastes.
Quinn- Daria's little sister!
Names I have suggested:
Grier
Aine
Mirin or Merrin
Genevieve
Delaney
Larkin
Roslyn
Teagan
Bronwen
Tierney
Amalia
Amalthea
Names I like but would never use
Janneth
Lethe
Ophelia (looks pretty, sounds like ill feel ya)
Rue (thank you hunger games followers for ruining this for me)
"Common" names I like but wont use
Emily
Lisbeth
Matilda
Names neither of us love but we like enough
Reese
Cameron
Dierdre
Our guilty pleasure name but we know other people would give us/her flack for it:
Seth/Sethe
Help! Suggestions? Your thoughts? A sledgehammer?

lots of them I don't know how to begin to pronounce. I wouldn't use these personally but not my kid.

Date: 2013-06-27 01:22 am (UTC)Felicia - I think of Felicia Day from Doctor Horrible's Sing-Along Blog, which I love. That said, I don't actually care for the name.
Willow- What's your cut-off point for rankings? Willow is ranked 171 by the SSA. To me, that's not too terribly high, but then, your opinion may vary and popularity isn't always the same in every area. Personally, I like Willow. It's on my list, although it's not a top contender anymore.
Quinn- Again, it's a boys' name.
Names I have suggested:
Grier - There's something about this name that I like, but then, I don't quite like it either.
Aine - Is this like Anya?
Mirin or Merrin - I don't like it.
Genevieve - I LOVE it.
Delaney - I like it better for boys.
Larkin - I really like this name.
Roslyn - I really don't like this name, especially the spelling.
Teagan - It's okay. It makes me think of Tegan and Sara.
Bronwen - I think this is a really nice name.
Tierney - Another boys' name. It used to be on my list.
Amalia - It reminds me of Somalia.
Amalthea - I've never heard of this one. I don't like it.
Names I like but would never use
Janneth - Nope.
Lethe - Leh-tuh?
Ophelia - I always want to like this name because it does look pretty, but as you say, it does sound a bit like "I'll feel ya."
Rue - I think this name is cute.
"Common" names I like but wont use
Emily - Eh, I've never really been a huge fan.
Lisbeth - I don't like it; however, I think Elizabeth is lovely.
Matilda - I think I would like this better if it weren't for the movie.

Date: 2013-06-27 06:07 pm (UTC)I like Roslyn in it's many variant spellings and I especially like the nickname "Roz". All of the names you indicate are boy's names (with the exception of Seth) are listed as girl's names on all the websites we've been trolling for girl's names. And Sethe is a girl's name as well.
Lethe= "Lee-thuh"- like Lisa with a lisp. I can see myself explaining it to people for the rest of my child's life and I don't want her to be Lisa-with-a-lisp.
Ophelia- we actually agreed on this one until I had a dream in which we were leaving the hospital with our daughter and freaking out because all I could think of was "I'll feel ya". :-(

Date: 2013-06-27 08:31 pm (UTC)If I had to pick a version of Roslyn, it would probably be Rosalind, which I guess I say slightly differently as well. Roz makes me think of the lady from the 1-800-ASK-GARY commercials. I don't know if that's a local or national thing...
I've only ever heard of Corbin as masculine, but that doesn't mean people aren't using it on girls, especially with the altered spelling. Quinn and Tierney I know I have seen as unisex or sometimes even just feminine, but they were both traditionally male names as far as I know. I know I saw Delaney listed as unisex on one site in particular, and as it is a surname, I assumed it was traditionally male as well, so I was surprised when I checked BtN and I found that they listed it as feminine. I can see where people think those names sound feminine, I just generally don't like when names switch gender myself. Of course, this is your child; I'm not trying to argue or anything, just having a dialogue about what I have seen and feel personally. :)
Lee-thuh makes me think a bit of "lethal." That said, the pronunciation I guessed made me think of "letter," so... I wonder, have you considered Aletha or Alethea? Either of those could use Lethe as a nickname.
Sorry you had to drop a name you both agreed on. Maybe you can use Ophelia as a middle name?

Seth/Sethe - This is terrible for a girl. Seth is ok for a boy.

Date: 2013-06-27 06:15 pm (UTC)It is a sad day indeed when the name you love is hated by so many people, isn't it? Even stranger that my husband and I BOTH love it for a girl. Sethe is a girl's name, by the way. http://www.babynamewizard.com/baby-name/girl/sethe, http://nameberry.com/babyname/Sethe.
Where I grew up, there wasn't really a hard and fast recognition of girls vs boys names. I knew boys named Kelly, Lindsay, Hillary. I also knew girls named Justin, Devon, Timothy and Elliot. Names in my extended family tend to run toward unisex.

Date: 2013-06-27 11:57 pm (UTC)I would be interested to know the history of Sethe and where it came from, other than it's the female version of Seth. I checked the link and there was very little information there.

Date: 2013-06-27 10:03 am (UTC)If the twins had been two girls, the other would have been Imogen Dawn.
I prefer Greer to Grier. Do you like Briar? Bronwyn?

Date: 2013-06-27 06:19 pm (UTC)My son's invisible friend/?ghostly friend is called Iggy (Imogen?).
Greer is the last name of one of my friends. I would have to spell it Grier just to break the association.
I love Briar but my husband said he hates it. And yes, I like both spellings of Bronwen but husband nixed them both. :-( He says he knew a bitchy girl in highschool named Bronwen and he just can't. I can respect that.
We have a lot of strong associations with names and we have lived in 4 states and known a lot of people. It's so hard for us to pick names! We went through the 10,000 boy names book 3 times before we agreed on our son's name!

Date: 2013-06-29 03:42 am (UTC)Out of the names listed, I like Roslyn and Ophelia best. For suggestions, maybe: Imogen, Violet, Maeve, Seren, Lael, Sloane, Rowan, Ceylon, Sinclair, India, Auden, Gillian, Hollis, Linden, Audra, Ellis/Elliot, Briony, or Rory?

I'm afraid that it will just always be associated with the Hunger Games now just like names like Luna, Cedric, Cormac, and Hermione will always be associated with Harry Potter.

Date: 2013-07-16 12:05 am (UTC)The Social Security Administration in the U.S. keeps track of popular baby names since the late 1800s, and Rue was not on the popular names list for 2012 (or any of the last 133 years). I don't know if there's an equivalent database in the UK.

Date: 2013-07-10 01:49 pm (UTC)I like your taste in names. I don't think Seth/Sethe is bad for a girl. I know a good amount of girls with "boys" names, and none of them were tortured or turned out to be weirdos :)

Date: 2013-07-10 06:33 pm (UTC)I really do not like Corbynn. I don't like the name and I especially don't like the spelling.
I would never get "I'll feel ya" from Ophelia. I had to stretch to even make it sound like that.
I think it's actually spelled Deirdre. Deirdre is also the name of a tragic character from Irish legend.
Sethe is literary, from Beloved I think. I didn't read the book or see the movie, but I think Sethe had a rough time of it. Still, I think the name is attractive and unique.
