I googled it after my iPhone knew it to auto finish it as I was typing and, apparently, Ghirlandaio was an Italian Renaissance painter.

WTF? It looks like a trendy spelling of Girl - Ghirl plus and, then aio slapped on the end. Girl-and-ay-oh. Yuck! Is her nickname going to be Ghirl? >:(

HE (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Domenico_Ghirlandaio) was... Got to say that she's got herself a name that will mean that she is forever ungendered. If she likes that, cool, if not, sad for her. Allegedly the name is a nickname "The nickname "Il Ghirlandaio" (garland-maker) came to Domenico from his father, a goldsmith who was famed for creating the metallic garland-like necklaces worn by Florentine women."

Hoping the family are/have art historians in it because I do think he was an awesome painter. Not the name I'd have chosen to link with him - Domenico/Domenica would have been more my inclinations if I'd wanted to do that...
