What's a name that you LOVE that everybody else seems to hate, and why do you love it?

Mine is Maude (surprise!). I posted my list a few months back with that on it and all I got was "Ewww! So old!" I love it and will always love it for threee reasons:

1. It is the name of a very intelligent, optimistic, beautiful character in my favorite movie (Harold and Maude) and I would love to name my daughter for her and ba able to share the movie with her and say, "She is what you are to me. I want you to have a just as beautiful, meaning life as she does." Or something equally corny.

2. It's also the name of an awesome vintage shop in my city. They sell local artist's jewlery and fashions and host events all the time to benefit charities that I believe in (the women's shelter, pro-choice campaigns, etc). The owners also run a local record label and sign & sell a bunch of local bands. It's just a really neat place that is trying really hard to make the world a better place and give people chances they usually wouldn't get.

3. I just think it's pretty. HAHA. I love the look of all the letters together. It's also not popular/trendy in the least, and as someone with a popular name, I would love for my daughter to always be Maude...not Maude K. or Maude T. or whatever everywhere she goes.

Lorna or Lorenna. It gets the old lady sounding comments.

For guys, Hadrian is probably an outcast as well.

i completely & totally support the use of maude as a girl's name, as long as you play cat stevens at her birth.

J'adore Maud(e).

Mine is Winifred. EVERYONE hates it. I like it because:

(1) I just like the way it rolls off one's tongue.

(2) I think it grows up well. I can picture a tiny baby named Winifred, a child, a teenager, and an adult. I think it's graceful, timeless.

(3) I LOVE the nicknames Winn and Fred.

(4) I think it sounds good with my other favorite name, Lilah, and with my childrens' names, Cordelia and Isaac.

(5) It's the name of a beautiful, intelligent, wonderful, funny and cheerful character on my favorite television show (Angel), and I'd love for my child to know that her mother's name choice as inspired by someone as wonderful as Fred Burkle. I didn't name her sister after Cordelia Chase, that was a fluke, but I was glad to see the other Cordelia's character blossom into someone that my child wouldn't be embarrassed to share a name with.

It's funny - I'd never met a Maud(e) in my life until my senior year of college, when two freshmen named Maud came in. So as much as I know in theory that it is an old-lady name, it just sounds fresh and nice to me.

But then, I tend to like old lady names.

oh easy! Evelyn! I LOVE it and it will be my girl's name... mainly because I love the nickname 'Evie'. However everyone DETESTS it because they say it sounds too old. Boo! lol

**ashamed**

Mine is Madison. When I was younger I wanted to spell it Madyson. I've since moved beyond that, to a point where the name is no longer on my list, but I still like it.

For boys, it might be Memphis. Most people hate that as well. I love place names though.

Bailey...nobody seems to think it's a good name for a girl. everyone I ever mention it to with like maybe 2 exceptions thinks of it as a dog's name. I like it because it's not super common but it's not way out there. and partly because of it being Irish, like me. :)

I like Maude, too. ^_^ Reminds me of the TV show. My favorite movies, books, shows, etc., frequently expose me to names that grow to become all-time favorites which I might not have considered otherwise.

Looking through my boys' favorite list, the only one that would really fit this category would be Chase. I like it. I think it sounds pretty cool, yet still classy. I don't think most people agree, and many are probably too instantly reminded of the bank. x_x I even like the similar-sounding Chance, but I do think Chase makes a better name.

For girls....
There's Jemima. I guess the pancake syrup or something else turns people off, I dunno, but I rarely get good feedback on that one. I'm not even totally sure what I like about it, except that it's different and has a nice sound. I think it's both cute and pretty without being frilly.

I too like Madison, even though at first I thought it screamed "TRENDY!" I've come to find it's the only "-son" name I like for a girl.

There is of course, my favorite name, Delilah. A lot of people dislike that for the Biblical association. I think it's beautiful, spirited and graceful. Actually I've realized that there are a number of online folks with good taste who don't seem to mind it, and even like it. :D

And the other one for me is Ophelia. This one's been climbing to the top of my favorites list lately. I LOVE it. In fact right now one of my favorite name combos is Elle Ophelia; I love the two names, the combination of them, and the flow. I know Ophelia gets the "oh feel ya--ha ha ha" reaction, but I honestly never thought of it that way until I heard someone say that. I like everything about it; it's rare, it's pretty, it's a literature name. =]

I love both Chase and Ophelia! I also love Gemma spelled Jemma, which everyone else hates!

Our mortgage is from Chase though, so I do think of that now...

Ophelia for me too :-) though everyone i've mentioned it to loves it.

Esmé is mine probably, i've loved it forever and lots of people think it's old ladyish and weird. I know it's coming into fashion with the retro names now though..

I dont like any odd boys names.. although Rory is apparently hard to say for some people.

I love Elisabeth. My husband won't let me use it because he is Catholic-Irish and it's the name of the queen. I've loved it since I read "Little Women" in the fourth grade and always said I would name my daughter Elisabeth. I also LOOVE Augusta.
I like Alistair for a boy, which nobody seems to like.

My sister's middle name is Maude. She loves loves loves it.

Ada for me. I just adore the name Ada and if my (future) husband agrees, I so plan on using it for my daughter. One of my friends thinks Ada is too old ladyish but I've only met one Ada my entire life and she was a customer when I was working at Dairy Queen last summer and she wasn't old, probably 40 or so.

I also really like the name George. I just like the nickname Georgie. My friend also thinks this is too old sounding and she hates it because of George W. Bush. I hate Bush too but I don't associate George with him.

Chance...I get the that's a dog's name comments

most people don't like Bailey for a boy, but that's my #1 fav. I don't like it for a girl at all.

I also happen to like my name [Linda]. I'm nearly 21 and constantly getting "that's my mom's/aunt's name!" and people usually don't like it.

Not of my names are highly received but none are universally disliked either. I'd actually prefer that people initially dislike them. I know friends and family will like the name once they have a person associated with it. And hopefully the popularity of the names will continue to stay low.

Eleanor.

1. Eleanor Roosevelt. I would love to name my daughter after her.
2. Nicknames such as Nora, Ellen, Elly, etc.
3. Nicknames make it a good name for a kid as well as a mature, sophisticated sounding name for an adult.

I will at least be using it as a middle name, but I'd love to use it as a first, too.

I like your name :)

I also like old lady names... my favorite is Hazel and almost everyone hates it. The ones who don't hate it completely tell me that I can't use it because it's my Boston terrier's name. I know it's not nice to name your child after a family pet, but I love it that much. At the time that I named my dog Hazel, I didn't love the name enough to use it on a human child, but it's since grown on me. I'm not sure why I like it so much. I've never known a Hazel before, but it elicits happy feelings for some reason :)

As for a boys name... my #1 pick is Ezra. People seem to hate it though. I first heard it while watching the dvd of one of our favorite shows, Into the West. Once again, I just really like the way it comes out.

I love Maud. I prefer that spelling because of Lucy Maud Montgomery, who wrote Anne of Green Gables. She went by Maud.

There's also Tennyson's poem about Maud:

COME into the garden, Maud,
For the black bat, night, has flown,
Come into the garden, Maud,
I am here at the gate alone;
And the woodbine spices are wafted abroad,
And the musk of the rose is blown.

2. It's cute, and edgy in my opinion.
