I want to preface this by saying...I am not pregnant, nor do I plan to become pregnant in the foreseeable future, so these name are all for hypothetical children.

I have two names picked out for girls that I have my heart set on using: Colleen Bess and Ruth Marie. They are names that I have picked because they have special meaning to me. I also have a long list of girls names that I like if I needed more than two girls names, and a few guilty pleasure names. One such guilty pleasure name is Dusty (more specifically, Dusty Rose). I had a volunteer once named Dusty and I thought the name was cute and worked for her, but while I liked it...I'm not sure it's one that I'd ever really use.

On the other hand, I have a hard time with names for boys. I'm picky when it comes to popularity of names (it comes from being an Amanda in the 80s), so if a name is too popular or seems like it is becoming too popular, it looses it's appeal to me. My #1 boys name for quite awhile was Justin, but...I feel it's too popular (anything in the Top 100 is "too popular" for my taste).

Today I came up with the idea to combine one of my guilty pleasures and one of my favorite boys names and come up with a boys name I would actually use. That being said...what do you think of the name Dustin for a boy, with the nn Dusty?

Dustin's great! I approve! Dusty would make a lovely nickname for him as well, and if it doesn't suit him when he's older you can call him by his actual name. It could work well though as well, and suit him even as he ages.

Wow, for guilty pleasure names, I was expecting something totally different! These names sound great to me. I know a Dustin nn Dusty and I think it is great.

It's not my style, but I think Dusty as a nickname for Dustin works.

Dusty rose is a very specific color name, so I find it strange to want to name a kid that (I understand that it's a guilty pleasure name, but still...). It'd be like "Mint Green" or "Goldenrod." This is dusty rose:

However, I think Dustin/Dusty is a great alternative. I don't really like it myself, but it's just fine as a name.

Ruth Marie and Colleen Bess are cute. My 8 year old just got a pet rat and named her Ruth and people are all telling her what a nice strong name she chose. A lot of people seem to like it (then again, who's gonna be mean to an 8 year old over a rat's name? No one I know, I hope!).

This made me crack up so much! I've got five rats (and have been responsible for naming six since I started owning them a few years ago) and my boys always have names based on things or characters I like. I hope Ruth has a friend though, rats really do better in pairs or groups. They're extremely social. One of mine stopped eating and eventually died of what I would call depression after his brother died.

Yes, we have 2. Ruth and Ivy. My 6 year old wanted to name her Climbey, but came up with Ivy after I suggested, "How about things that climb?" I was thinking of "Monkey" or something, cause even that is better than Climbey, but she came up with Ivy herself.

I really like the name Dustin. It is my cousins name and growing up we called him dusty sometimes but I'm really not a huge fan of intentionally calling a male by the name Dusty.

I knew a boy named Dusty, not short for anything. We always found it strange, but it worked for him.
