[identity profile] velkoria.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
I am writing a story and I need help naming a character... Basically this is what I want for her but the names I've tried haven't stuck.

She's a bit on the shier side but has a wicked bad temper if that helps at all.

Dark hair and eyes and fair skin, born and raised in the US (so no foreign names).

I want her to have a name that would fit in this day and age but nothing oonique or kreatiff. Also, the name needs to be shortened to a more 'gender ambiguious' sounding one syllable nick name.

Names I've tried/nicknames:

Kimberly/Keek/Kiki (and then I happened to watch an episode of the Kardashian and that died).
Susan/Sue (not necessarily masculine).
Katherine/Kate.
Katherine/Kit (from Kitty).
Cate/Cat/Kit (I really liked the name Kit for a while but was never convinced 100%).
Romina/Remy (really loved this one but, again, it didn't stick).
Josephine/Jo (too overused).
Danielle/Dani (but then my male lead turned out to be a Daniel with the nn Dani).
Mariela/Mara (loved it but seems too latin for her)

And now I am stuck... I wouldn't mind more "different" sounding names like Willow, Willa, Lily and stuff but I don't know... I need suggestions asap!

One name that jumps out at me is Talia, could be Tal (rhymes with "pal") for a unisex nickname. I also liked your idea of Willa or Willow with "Will" as a nickname.

lol for sure. My fave is the bachelor/ette franchise. :)

I'm supposed to be working, but there are great suggestions below! Maybe later if I need a diversion I'll think of more if you still are taking suggestions. :)

Kylee? But I don't know why Kyle would be the nn for Kylee unless Kylee REALLY was a tomboy or something like that.

Calliope could be Cal or Kyle. It has a KA and an LY sound in there. Too much of a stretch? Plus, Calliope is a mouthful so I could see someone wanting to go shorter. Especially if, as mentioned a second ago, she was a bit tomboyish.

Growing up, I knew a Marissa whose nn was "Ray", so that's the first thing that popped into my mind. (also, she fit the dark hair/eyes and occasional killer temper too :P)

Melanie/Melody/Melania shortened to Mel might also work.

I don't really know what this could be a nickname for, but what about Rex? That jumped out at me as I read your post. Interesting nn for a girl. I'm sure there are some good names it would work with, but nicknames come about so randomly sometimes, it could be as easy as her loving dinosaurs as a kid. :P

What about a single syllable ambiguous name, like Reese or Quinn? There's also Matilda/Matt, Josephine/Jo, Jamie/Jim, Jemima/Jim, Katherine or Katelyn/Kit (and someone could annoy her by calling her Kit-Kat), Willow or Willa/Will, Patrice or Patricia/Pat, Louisa/Lou, Rhonda/Ron, Lauren/Ron or Lo, Erica/Rick, Arianna/Ari, Miranda/Randy or Andi, Morgan/Mo, Amelia or Melissa/Mel, Lindsay, Linda or Lynette/Lin, Camilla/Cam, Dara/Dare, Lucy/Lu, Jackie or Jackelyn/Jack, Ophelia/Phil, Janice/Jan or John, Gertrude/Ted, Victoria/Vic or Tor, Gabrielle or Gabriella/Gabe, Michelle/Mich, or Lisa/Lee...

Alison (nn Ali)
Andrea (nn Andie)
Karen (nn Ren...not a common nickname but there was a drama series called In the Flesh on BBC 3 about a month ago and the main character was called Kieren and his friend called him Ren...I kind of like it...)

Can't think of any more. Hope these help... :)

Seeing "Sue" described as not masculine made me think of "A Boy Named Sue" by Johnny Cash :)
