agree/disagree? I see at least 4 on there that are still being used or I could see coming back. Rose doesn't belong on a list with Mildred or Myrtle!

I can see Gretchen, Opal, and Rose totally still being used today. I actually went to school with a Gretchen and I'm only in my 20's. Besides, everything old is (eventually!) new again. I'm sure a lot of those names could eventually make a come back. We're seeing names today that I'm sure our parents considered "old." Evelyn, Lydia, etc...

lol my grandmother's name is Nelwyn Dean. I desperately wanted to honor her but hate Nelwyn, Nell, Nella, etc. When we had our 3rd girl I gave up on waiting for a boy to give the first name of Dean, so that's our youngest's middle name just like her great grandma. :D

My father's cousin named her daughter Charlotte (now seven or eight years old), and I've always thought that was so pretty. But my mother always said she didn't like it, and then a few months ago, Charlotte came up in conversation and my mother said, "She's named after your great-grandmother's sister! That's an old name!", to which I could only say, "I didn't know Grandma [last name] had a sister!" The sibset is Zoe (named after her grandmother), Charlotte, and Margaret ( named after her aunt and nn Margot) and I've always thought that they go well together. Ah, the generational gap...

These people are crazy. Rose, Opal, Martha, Ruth, Gretchen and Beatrice are beautiful names that I can see being used on girls today.

I'm not fond of Mildred, Phyllis, Gertrude or Myrtle and, while Ethel is a family name, I really dislike it. I'm glad I was spared that particular family tradition.

I'm on the fence about Barbara and Blanch(e). They are fine names, just not my style.

I think Agatha will make a comeback, since it's a classic and old names are new again. I can't see Marge disappearing, since it's really a nickname for Margaret, which is still being used.

I'm glad you mentioned a bunch of the names, because ain't no way I'm clicking through fifteen slides. DEATH TO SLIDESHOWS.

Rose as a middle name is so common it's practically a cliche these days. Beatrice is moving up the popularity charts for sure, and I think Opal might be too.

agree. my middle name is rose and i'm in my early 30s -- would totally name a little girl rose or rosie today. i plan on using ruth for a middle name if i have a girl. these are way off. not sure i see the point of "never again" when it comes to names. they always recycle.

Ethel - Downton Abbey; also kinda pretty in a grounded way. I see this as in the same league as names like Mabel and Olive; it's a magnet for hipsters
Beatrice - The nerdy set won't let this one go. Beatrix is even prettier, at that.
Gretchen - This is actually super cute, and it's fresh again. Could be Astrid or Zelda's little sister. I know a two-year-old by this name, so it's still going.
Rose - This one is here forever.

Rose? Really? That name won't ever die.

I'm surprising myself by saying that I kind of like Agatha! It's definitely a name that I can see making a comeback.

I know an Opal and she is 18. It'll definitely start to get more popular.

Gertrude and Gretchen will probably come back, too.

And Beatrice definitely isn't dying! I know quite a few.

Overall I don't really agree. There were a couple names that will probably be "endangered" like Barbara and Ethel, but other than that, the others are pretty solid.

While I agree with most of these, I can see Opal, Beatrice, and Ruth being used today. No idea how Rose got in there. It's popular, I think.

i could see Gretchen and Beatrice making a comeback. Honestly, I never thought Evelyn would be anything but an old lady name, but that's coming back! Give anything enough time, and it will stop being thought of as an 'old lady name'. Though Marge, Gertrude, and Myrtle might take a reallllly long time.

Um, I don't think Rose and Ruth will ever be names we'll never see again. It'll be more middle name fillers than anything, if that... but they'll never go away like some names I do agree with.

Myrtle - the naming after a city trend is still hot, I don't think this will retire
Barbara - I can totally see this coming back. Barbie?
Phyllis - It has a "y", this name is made for our generation.
Marge - Margaret could totally make a comeback, Maisie is an adorabel nickname for a child, they grow into Marge
Ruth - my 25yo sister is Ruth. Its a charming name.
Rose - my 17yo sister is Rose. Wow, my parents sure can pick the outcast names! She was named after my mother's grandmother, it can make a comeback.
Martha - well, maybe they have this one right. Its my aunt's name and I really don't care for it. Plus,I'm from Boston and I have to really concentrate to say it as Mar-tha instead of Marah-tah. But that's just my accent

Mildred sounds like Mildew. Gertrude had rude right in it,

Daisy and Pearl are nicknames for Margaret? How??

I disagree with SO many of those! Some of the names certainly have negative connotations for me... Marge (Large Marge from Pee Wee's Big Adventure), Gertrude (the name of the crazy lady who murdered a local girl in town a few decades ago), Myrtle (sounds like turtle). And sure, some of them aren't my style (like Barbara and Phyllis), but some are quite nice! Agatha, Rose, Beatrice, Opal, Gretchen... all lovely names.

I LOVE the name Gretchen and would totally use it! I also really like Agatha, and I don't mind Phyllis. I can definitely see Opal making a bit of a comeback. Rose just cracks me up. That is one name that will NEVER disappear.

The only ones I agree with are Barbara, Ethel (my grandmother's name), Mildred, Phyllis, Myrtle.

Interesting they chose Rose (with the Golden Girls pic) instead of the name of the actress, i.e., Betty. I think Betty is over, too.

I know someone who just named their daughter Gretchen. I love Beatrice, Agatha, Ruth, and Martha. Opal is still nice. And Phyllis isn't near as bad as Myrtle or Mildred.

I disagree with Barbara, I know a 22 year old Barb. I also know several little kids named Beatrice, Gretchen, Ruth, and Rose.

I surprised myself at liking Myrtle. I like plant names, and had kind of forgotten about that one. I can see it making a comeback as well.

Martha
Gretchen
Beatrice

Especially Rose, but I totally disagree with all of them. Pretty much any name can come back. Pretty sure 40 years ago no one thought some of the 'old lady' names in style now would ever come back.

Exactly. Makes you wonder if the next round of comeback names will be Nancy, Linda, Donna, and Kathy...

I had a classmate in middle school and high school named Gretchen. Nobody ever said her name was "old lady" at all.

This is terribly researched (as its comments state) and very close-minded. I get the dislike of Gertrude, but they misspelled Blanche and apparently have no clue that Rose is now a very common middle name. It's funny that they said Rose is being forsaken in favor of Violet and Lily because when my little neighbor Violet was born four or five years ago, my mother said, "Like that little girl on Leave It To Beaver?"

And Beatrice is very pretty---Princess Beatrice pulls it off pretty well, and it would be so cute on a little girl these days.

Blanche is the only one that I would ever possibly use myself, but I think that Gretchen, Opal, Beatrice and Rose will still get used a lot.

Rose is definitely not on its way out. One of my good friends will be a father this fall, and right now that's the front runner on their list of girl names.

I think Rose is still popular and won't go away. I know a 5ish year old named Rose. I've known a sprinkling of Gretchens in my life. I know a 6th grader named Ruth (sometimes called Ruthie) and a 1st grade Beatrice. Evelyn seems to be making a comeback, but I still feel like it's an old lady name.

My almost 70 year old mother is Ethel. She never really liked her name, but only because it sounded like ethylene, a chemical.
