[identity profile] lipsty.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames

Watching Game of Thrones last night, hubby and I both admitted we kind of liked the name Danerys, but we could never use it. Could GoT fade into obscurity and then we can pretend the name is Welsh or something?

My husband has been reading the books since he as in high school...and while we love the name too you're going to have a hard time pretending it's welsh or something. It's clearly from the book which is now a hugely popular show...

We thought about Arya before the show came out and now I would never...

Game of Thrones will never fade into obscurity. Although, you could benefit from the fact that a lot of people, even huge fans, think that her name is actually Khaleesi. Or that's what she gets called most often.

GoT has a few names that I like, and would use, but Daenerys isn't one of them. It's just so out there. It's so obvious where it's from. Plus, I don't like the character, lol.

I also love the name. My friend named her cat Danerys, the show is just too popular to pull the name off as a child.

I also love the name "Khaleesi" even though its just her title, Arya and Margaery.

I love Arya, too, but we counted it out because of the popularity. Hubby won't let me get another cat to name Khaleesi, but that has nothing to do with the name and everything to do with his dislike of cats.

GoT isn't going anywhere fast! I'm half way through the fifth book, and if HBO intends to cover all of this, it is going to take years. (Which I'm sure they are banking on...) Not to mention, the fifth book is not the last, and we don't know the fate of Danerys. It could end up being like naming your kid Sauron.

It is such a nice name, though!

It doesn't sound Welsh to me, and I don't like the idea of mis-attributing a name to a different source and lying about it. Use it or don't, but don't lie about where it came from. And you might want to wait until the series ends, at least in the books.

haha all I can think about is Tom Cruise naming his kid Suri which he said meant strength in some language and it ended up being carport or something. lol.

We know people who named their baby Cersei (the evil blonde incestious queen). So, given that anything is possible lol but I wouldn't probably.

Are you sure they weren't naming her after Circe? The names sound the same, and she predates Game of Thrones by like 1500 years.

I love both her name and her title. Am currently working on the husband but we'll probably end up with something "normal"..

Daenerys or Dany...love.

I also love Khaleesi.

Edit- Plus she's a total bad ass.
