Weird name

I was at work and served a woman. She was in her late 30's/early 40's and was a manager at a local bank.

Name: Tamarin

A tamarin is a breed of monkey. Sounds pretty, but the idea of being named after a monkey seems rather daft if you ask me. I guess she is living proof that you can still get a good career with an unusual name though!

I've never heard of the tamarind fruit so the monkey was the first thing to crop up for me.

Tamarind is probably in your foods if you eat Indian or Asian foods. It's also really good if you can find the raw fruit. I'd say "fresh," but it grows in pods like long peanuts and you let it dry so it's like fruit leather, then crack the pods, and eat the tamarind "leather" bite by bite, spitting out the large (lima bean sized) seeds as you go. Thai tamarind is sweet. Mexican tamarind is sweetish sour. I prefer Thai, my husband prefers Mexican. You should look for it! :) (It's also a great natural laxative, like prunes. Tons of fiber).

The *only* reason I've heard of it is because I have a cousin who used to live in Thailand and she mailed me some tamarind candies; I've never heard of it previously.

If I was going to name my kid after a monkey that's definitely the one I would pick. So cute! Especially the ones with the mustaches, I love watching those at Twycross Zoo. :D

When I was about 8 or 9, we had a school trip to the zoo and this girl in my class named Tamarin hated every second of it once we got to the monkey enclosure. It sounds pretty enough but once classmates catch on to the monkey parallel there's no going back for a while. In high school, she reinvented herself as Tammy!

I thought of Tamarind. It doesn't bother me too much, I bet it means something in some language :) Not sure if it's a guaranteed to get bullied name.

My fiend has a son named Simeon - I know the monkey word is simian, but I can't unlink the two in my head.

This makes me so sad. Simeon was an amazing, faithful man of God whose story is told in the Bible. One doesn't have to believe the Bible is the word of God to appreciate the legacy of Simeon the man, but so few people know about any of the Bible's narrative anymore, in spite of its great influence on history and literature worldwide. Apparently monkey types are more prevalent.

I didn't mean this comment as a personal attack. It just got me thinking about how common it is for people to have Biblical names that are meaningless to the people around them. I am certain you are not the only one who makes this link between the name and the monkey type. :)

And I would consider myself to know the bible fairly well. At least more than the average person as a regular churchgoer and catholic school teacher. I still had never heard of Simeon in my 28 years. Simon, yes. Simeon, no.

The father in question is a pastor, so he obviously got the connection.

I think it's pretty nice. It reminds me of Tamsin, which I love, so that's probably why.
