[identity profile] chillinbabejodi.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames

Now that we're thinking about ttc again, I thought I'd run some names past this community! In no particular order:

Jack - is it too boring? I always find one syllable names awkward to pair with a middle name. We've considered Edward and Henry, but neither seem to be the one.
Kieran
Casper
Brady
Nico/Nicolas/Nicholas - I adore Nico. My husband always wanted a little Nicky, but also likes Nico. He'd prefer Nicholas as a full name, I Nico, which do you think?

Isla - I adore this. It feels too popular though. I considered Lila and Kyla and like both but I keep coming back to Isla. My husband likes the nn issy/izzy. We're pronouncing it eye-la, is it too much of a stretch for him to use the nn issy?
Mila/Myla - how do you pronounce this? I like me-la, he likes my-la and we've also heard mill-a
Rosie - I like this as it is, as does hubby, but I feel it needs to have a "formal" version. He doesn't like rose/rosa/Rosalie/rosemary, any other ideas? Is Rosie too nicknamey?
Luna
Naomi
Ada

Jack is nice. I don't think middle names are important.

Nico is cute.

I don't get Izzy as a nickname for Isla, sorry.

I would pronounce Mila as Mee-la and Myla as My-la. Probably.

Rosette.

I love Naomi & Ada.

I love your list! My oldest son is Jack :) He really suits his name, he is very strong willed and artistic. I have met some Jacks, adult & child who really don't suit the name, IMO...but when it does fit the person, awesome!

My dog is Luna but I would totally use for a human girl (if I didn't have 3 sons/a dog already using the name).

Casper is great!!! Love love love it, sounds too much like our last name though.

Jack always seems like a nickname to me.
Not a fan of Kieran or Brady personally, sorry.
I love Casper! It's on my top five list.
Nico as a nn of Nicholas is cute.

Isla is pretty and even though it's popular it's not trendy if you know what I mean. It's a classic.
Mila is mee-la, Myla is my-la. I've never heard the mill-a pronunciation.
Rosie, Luna, Naomi, and Ada are all pretty. I really like your girl name choices.

Here is the popularity growth curve for Isla in the US:
2007: did not chart in top 1000 (and had not charted since 1908, and had never been higher than #713, in an era when the lower 500 included some real howlers like Tempie, Classie and Icy--Icy had a higher popularity peak than Isla!)
2008: #623
2009: #346
2010: #297
2011: #268

If that's not trendy, no name is. It came out of nowhere and is rocketing upwards. According to Nameberry, it's one of the fastest rising names in the entire country. What's more, it feels part of a larger trend of names--Eva, Ava, Stella etc.

I still think it's a great name, but any parent choosing it needs to do so with their eyes open to its trendiness and probable continued future climb.

Are you in the UK? I knew of a British girl named Iona, which I really loved. It's got the same feel as Isla, but not quite as common. I live in the US and I feel like it would get a brow raise here because its pretty much unheard of.

In terms of Mila/Myla... A poster here recently shared that her daughter is Maelle (My-Elle), which is very pretty and similar. I also know of a little baby girl named Minna, which I think is really beautiful.

Rosanne/Rosanna
Rosetta
Rosina
Rosalind
Rosamund
Roselle

Maybe it's a bit of a stretch, but Rochelle is another one I thought of.

I love Jack! One of my student is called Jack Henry and I think it works rather well together!

I love Jack, Edward and Henry.
Kieran is great.
Casper is also great.
Brady doesn't do anything for me.
Nico/Nicolas/Nicholas - if it were me, I would name my son Nicholas and use Nico as a nn.

Isla - I love this name. I think Issy is fine as a nn.
Mila/Myla - I pronounce this Me-luh. I love it.
Rosie - I think this needs a full name. Rosamund, Rosalinda, Rosalind, Rosalia, Rosanna, Rosemarie.
Luna - This makes me think of Harry Potter and Luna Lovegood, but she was one of my favorite characters and I love the name anyway, so I would absolutely consider this.
Naomi - Love this name.
Ada - Not my cup of tea, but ok.

Jack is a cool solid name, though I have a cousin Jack (nn for John) who's a punk. I've met other cool Jacks though. Jack Edward sounds pretty good to me.

Brady and Nicholas are my favorites on your boys list. I have to agree with your husband---I love Nicholas as a full name and Nicky as an nn, but Nico is cute, too. Perhaps your husband could use Nicky as his special nickname while you and everyone else use Nico (or vice versa)?

Isla is very cute, but I don't think Issy/Izzy works with that pronunciation.

I'm saying Mee-la, but I guess you could go with My-la. Mila is the more common pronunciation, though (probably thanks to Mila Kunis and Milla Jovovich).

Have you considered Rosamund or Rosalind to get to Rosie? Or maybe Rosario?

Luna and Naomi are my favorites on your girls list: spunky, short, and pretty, but they both would age well. I'm neutral on Ada.

Jack Edward is my grandfather!
We were going to name our son after him, until we realized how damn common Jack (and Jackson) are.

Rosalynde, Rosalinda, Rosalin, Rosalynn is another set of variants.
Rosebud.

Or you could go with something a little more modern and imaginative. Rose-thorn would give her a really unusual twist in case she turns out to lean toward Goth. Rose-of-Sharon is actually the name of another flower, and the cool thing about that is if she doesn't like Rose, Sharon would be totally legit as a derivative of the name.

If you call her Luna, the children at school will insist she's Looney.

I would say My-la when it comes to Myla.

Jack is a nickname for Johnathan, if that helps. I like Nicolas shortened to Nico.

Personally, I pronounce Mila as "ME-la," Myla as "MY-la," and Milla as "MILL-la."

Aside from other suggestions I've already seen from Rose, what comes to mind are Ambrosia, Primrose, and Rosaline

I really like the name Jack; I wouldn't call it boring, more like simple, but it's a solid, nice name.

Kieran and Casper are okay. They're not really names that I feel either way about; but they don't offend me or anything.

Brady I dislike. Same with Nico.

I LOVE the name Isla, so much. It's so pretty. But that nickname seems like a sure way to ruin a pretty name.

I like Mila, if it's being pronounced Me-la.

I like Kieran, Nico, and Nicholas for a boy. I think I like Nicholas better as a full name than Nico - you can always call a Nicholas either Nico, Nick, or Nicky.

I love Isla and like Mila, Rose, and Naomi. I have always pronounced Mila mee-la. I don't think Issie is a nickname that derives from Isla per se, but I think you can nickname your kids whatever you want and that they don't have to be related to their actual name.
