[identity profile] bohemianvegan.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
I have noticed that there has been a trend in giving babies names of former U.S. presidents. Names like Reagan and Kennedy are popular girl's names. Honestly, I don't like those names for girls. I don't think Reagan is pretty. Kennedy sounds pretty, but it doesn't look like a name an adult woman should have. I have also seen it spelt as Kenadie and Kennedi.

I think we should bring back the more obscure presidents. Next kid I have is going to be Grover. Or maybe Rutherford. I think Lyndon works on a girl, right? Or maybe Millard?

:-p

HA. One of my favorite personal naming stories was when I was still in college, working as an art camp counselor.(George W. Bush had just been elected to his 2nd term.)
This woman comes in to sign up her three daughters: Madison, Raegann, and Kynnadi. I said something about how lovely and presidential her girls' names were, and she freaked out and started yelling "UGH, they are NOT! That is NOT our President's name! Why is everybody always saying that to me?!" before she stomped out.

Apparently she had no idea she named her children (sort of, with the terrible spellings) after former Presidents. ;)

It sounds like she didn't even know those were former Presidents' names, which is worse.

Whoaaaa.

I could probably gather from the spelling of her kids' names that she wasn't very keen on American history... or anything besides sparkles and glitter.

What's with the kre8tiv spellings? Kynnadi looks more like kye-na-dee.

I like Reagan, but I associate it too much with The Exorcist.
I actually love Kennedy on a girl. I think it is spunky but ages well.

Differences in opinion make the world go 'round!

I used to like Reagan and Kennedy a lot. I don't like Reagan anymore, after seeing The Exorcist and discovering how terrible a president he was. As for Kennedy, it's not really my style anymore.

Other presidential surnames I like as first names (all for boys though):
Truman
Monroe
Jackson
Harrison

Like I said above, my second cousin (boy, 5 months old) is Nixon. Yuck.

Isn't Regan/Raegan a character in a Shakespeare play? Some evil sister of someone. I can't remember right now but it wasn't someone I'd name my child after. Still, the name might be from there. On second thoughts, I was an English major and if I can't even remember who she was or what play it was in, I wouldn't imagine most people are picking Reagan from Shakespeare... :P

That's where I first saw it - studying King Lear. Even though she abs Goneril (ugh!) were evil I love the name Reagan for a girl. Luckily I'm a kiwi so the presidential vibe doesn't bother me too much.

The sisters were Regan, Goneril, and Cordelia. In King Lear. Regan and Goneril are evil and villainous, and Regan gouges someone's eyes out.

In the UK, our prime ministers' named don't really work as first names - Blair, Thatcher, Major, Churchill, etc. Cameron is the exception. I'd love to see a baby Disraeli!

I feel like Thatcher was pretty trendy (at least in this community) maybe a couple years back. I swear every other post was someone asking what everyone thought of 'Thatcher'.

Oh, and Blair is a fairly common girl's name.

I know, but I'm ignoring Blair because it's an awful name for a girl :)

I like Blair better than I like Reagan or Kennedy (or any various spellings)

Blair works for a first name, especially a girl.

My best friend's niece is named Eleanor Kennedy...that's her first and middle. I mentioned it before, but it still strikes me as funny since my best friend tries to pick names that sound like they could run for public office, but she didn't like that name. When I heard it all I could think was "Wow, that name was MADE for political office". I still think Eleanor is gorgeous, and has a ton of pretty nickname options.
