[identity profile] thelasttruth.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
I spent months revamping my names and just when I thought I was settled, I started to fall out of love with Beatrix.

As of right now, my little book where I keep track of how my names change lists these names (usually I have two of each, but I still can't settle on a second boy name).

Beatrix Adelaide Margaret (Bea - bee-ah)
Cordelia Wren Isley (Cora/Cori)
Atticus Rory Spencer (Gus)

How does Niamh Adelaide Margaret sound to you?

I'm also curious what you think of Naimh verses Neve. I live in Canada. I LOVE the traditional spelling, but I don't know if it will ever be read properly.

I love your choices! Beatrix is on our list, and I would love love love to use Rory if we could.

Niamh seems like something most people can pronounce. With Celtic names you always run the risk of them not being pronounceable, but I firmly believe you should dumb down your choices to suit other people, and if you have to correct people it really isn't a big deal. That said, Neve is lovely too.

I don't pronounce Neve and Niamh the same. Neve rhymes with the first syllable in beverage. Niamh rhymes with Steve.

Actually, Naimh can be pronounced Neev-ih or Neev.

I love your girl names. I really like Naimh Adelaide Margaret. I would spell it Naimh.

I don't care for Atticus, but I do like Rory and Spencer.

I am terrible at pronouncing Celtic names, so I definitely got Niamh wrong. I knew it wasn't what it looked like (Ni-am-ha) but I wasn't sure what it should be. I guessed Nisha, but turns out from the comments and the rest of your post it's Neev or Neve. I've seen the name before, but haven't met someone with it - I'm sure if I knew someone with the name and they told me the pronunciation I'd be better at remembering.

You should take this with a grain of salt though, as I thought Siobhan was "sha-vahn" and was later told its actually closer to "Shawn" or Sean.

I love your other names though.

Siobhan is pronounced "shi-VAWN."

That's what I was trying for with my "sha-vahn", same thing really. Then I was told it's "shawn" by someone who is 100% Irish (but not necessarily Celtic) so I was confused.

Strange. Every place I look online says you are correct!

I have known three Siobhan's and they all say it the way you do.

I don't know how to get "Bee-ah" out of Bea, really. And Beatrix is "bee-ay-trix" so I would want to say "bee-ay" if going that route. Do you say it differently?

I prefer Niamh Adelaide Margaret to Beatrix Adelaide Margaret.

I think Neve is accepted enough to be used. That's a tough one though. I love the original as well. I think you'd just have to explain it to a bazillion people--and if it's worth it to you, go for it.

I have met multiple Beatrix's (mostly sweet little old ladies) and they all pronounce it Be-ah-trix. I have never heard Be-ay-trix. Demographics, I suppose?

If you're in Cape Breton, it'll probably be pronounced correctly. ;-)

Cordelia reminds me of Anne of Green Gables :)

Niamh Adelaide Margaret - I love all of those names independently but I don't necessarily like them together. I like Beatrix Adelaide Margaret much more, even though I'm not a total fan of Beatrix - the names just go together better IMO.

I love Cordelia. It would be one of my own top choices for a girl but my mom and husband vetoed it, and I'm not even pregnant - I just brought it up one day. This is what motivated me to keep my own name preferences under my hat from now on.
