Does that first list come from the Telegraph? From what I understand, those mainly represent upper-class British family, so they don't give a full portrait of British naming styles. Likewise, the American list is also probably representative of a certain portion of the population, depending on what part of the country the list comes from. I'm just pointing this out because I see a lot of my fellow American name nerds squeeing over the periodic Telegraph lists, going on about how much better British naming is, not realizing that they're not seeing the whole picture. The American list has quite a few nice names to offset the wackier ones.

I didn't think it was a Telegraph announcement. (Although, full disclosure, I'm an American who LOVES the Telegraph announcements and gets super excited for them, even though I know they are really the upper crust names.)
However, when I studied abroad in the UK it seemed like even the not so posh areas seemed to have better names. Personally, I get really excited seeing the super Scottish names or ethnically Gaelic ones. Seriously, nothing cuter than an adorable red headed toddler named Angus or Hamish. ;)

I figured it was the Telegraph because of the overabundance of two or more middle names, but you might be right because most of them flow pretty well---Telegraph names tend to be a bit clunky in that regard.

They may seem "better" simply because you're not used to them. Some people in the UK may be just as annoyed with given nicknames (Alfie, Archie, Charlie) as American name nerds are with the -ayden names (I think I've seen some Nameberry comments to that effect, in fact). And unfortunately, unaltered Gaelic names don't work as well over here because of their non-intuitive pronunciation. On the other hand, the U.S. Top 1000 has many gorgeous Spanish names on it, (Santiago, Rodrigo, Mateo, and Octavio are some of my favorites for boys), but name nerds hardly ever talk about those.

Gosh, the first list is so flowery and literary. The history nerd in me wishes everyone had names like this today (and, of course, wore top hats and petticoats, lol).

I secretly love the subset of Eleanor, Clementine, Ophelia, Edward, Theodora, and Henrietta.

I'm surprised by the prevalence of Ophelia on the list. When I was pregnant with #1, I had a dream that we named our daughter Ophelia, nickname Phelix. I thought it was hilarious and ridiculous, but when I posted it here, everyone was like, "What? Ophelia is an awesome name!". I do agree the name is pretty, but Shakespeare's character connotations would be enough to turn me off. I guess I've seen too many productions of Hamlet to name my child after a lunatic.
