Would having sons named Rhys Owen and Rowan Benjamin be odd since the name Rowan is essentially the first son's names combined? Or am I reading waaaaaaay too much into this?

I've had people tell me it's not a big deal since we're not talking about doing something like Owen and Rowan, and then I've had people say it's far too ridiculous sounding to even consider.

What do you think?

To me, it sounds a little strange, especially when you say Rhys first (Rowan Benjamin and Rhys Owen doesn't sound as off-putting). I also dislike having first names that are too similar, since I feel like you'll always be stumbling over the names.

I think it's because both names are all soft sounds, so there's not as much enunciation. Like if you had...Richard and Robert, it's definitely not as weird, since there are harder sounds in there to break up mouth movement, whereas with Rhys and Rowan, you barely move your mouth, so it all comes out sort of mushed together. Does that make any sense?

I think it'd be a little much. I think Rhys and Rowan are too similar in the first place.

If you hadn't mentioned it I don't think I would have made the connection. How often are you going to use their full names anyway? Usually unless a child is in trouble, full names are not an every second thing.

Rhys and Rowan doesn't bother me, but I do think Rhys Owen and Rowan are way too close. If you do decide to use themI think Rowan's middle name should be Chris. ;)

I think the ave person doesn't care about middle names.

This. I like both names. I personally wouldn't use them both together, but I don't think they sound bad together or anything. Rhys and Rowan sounds fine.

I don't think Rhys and Rowan are particularly close, but I do think the Owen Rowan thing is a little weird. I mean, it's not a huge deal since one is the a middle and the other is a first name, and middle names aren't used all that often, but still, just a bit odd.

I don't think it is a big deal. You don't call them by their full names all the time, do you? Because otherwise, most people would just hear Rhys and Rowan.

It's fine. My husband was named, then 2 years later his baby brother was born and given my husband's middle name as his first name. That baby died at 4 months old, so when people realize my husband's middle name is the baby's first name, they think my husband came second and was named after his brother. No, the brother came second but his parents...ran out of names? Decided they liked Mark so much and didn't expect to have a 4th boy that they used a favorite as a middle name and then wanted it as a first name? I don't know why. But really, it doesn't matter.

Someone in the baby community with one of my kids was naming her baby Oxanna Roxanne. I was wondering if she realized she was naming the kid essentially the same thing twice... Your story is completely unoffensive in comparison. If you like Rhys Owen, go for it. Although, it does sound like a word, like re-sowing. Or risotto. Nothing horrid though; I've heard worse! I've considered worse for my own kid even!

It would bother me if I were choosing these names, but not if I met you and you shared their full names with me. Rhys and Rowan is a cute sibset. It's when you get to #3 that I would want something sorta matchy (I like alliteration).
