So my husband and I are talking about names. We're planning in ttc in the next six months or so. The last name is one syllable and starts and ends with a "k" sound, similar to cluck.

Names we've been discussing:
Isla- I adore this but it's sooo popular here in the UK..
Isabel- pretty much the same as above, hubby hates it though
Kyla- I like this, it's less popular than Isla but has similar sounds. Is it too similar to the last name?
Leona
Esther
Maisie
Darcy
Matilda - hubby says its too old fashioned?

Middles would be Sophie/Kate/Maria or possibly Annabelle/Annabella

Boys:
Elliott- but we're worried it's too close to our niece Ellie?
Reuben
Ciaran- again, worried about the alliteration?

Middles: James, John, Charles, Peter.

What'd you think? Any suggestions of similar names we might like?

When naming a child and worried about choosing a name too similar to a friend or relative consider how much time they will actually be together. If ours is a boy we chose Wesley well over a year ago. Our friends are also pregnant and they've been discussing Weston for a boy. So similar! But in the long run it won't be a problem at all. Choose the name you love and you will be happy.

That being said please don't name her Kyla Kate K...! I love alliteration, but I would always be thinking I named my kid Kkk.

You have some lovely names on your list, but I especially love Maisie. It's not that popular and it's very nice. I also think it's one that she could grow up with. Maisie Kate or Maisie Annabelle/Annabella flows well in my mind.

As for your boys' names, I'm not too fond of Reuben, but I like both Elliott and Ciaran. Elliott Charles or Ciaran James sound nice. :)

What about combining Maisie with Leona for Leonie (also a legitimate name that's less common and super cute!).

Another name that reminds me of Matilda is Madeline. I always think of the children's books and I just am in love with the name. It always feels youthful to me. I also like Sophie and Annabella/Annebelle.

For boys, I had been considering Theodore for a boy but then my husband's cousin named her daugher Theodora just two months before our son was born. UGH. For us, it was too close and my husband wasn't really in love with the name because of Alvin and the chipmunks. Plus, we see them often enough that it would be weird. Its really up to you, would you call him Eli or just Elliott?

Since you have both Isla and Leona on your list, I thought I'd suggest Iona. I hadn't seen that name before, but it was a British friend's girlfriend's name, so maybe it's more common there? I don't know. Either way, I think it's very pretty and Iona Kate sounds nice.

I like many alliterative names, and our daughter is Lillian L_____, so I'm not much help if you're trying to avoid alliteration. :)

I like Leona.

I do think Elliot is too similar to Ellie, yes.

Kyla doesn't seem like it would age well. The same goes for Maisie. Darcy always seems masculine to me thanks to Mr. Darcy.

Leona is quite nice. I think Leona Kate is great, but I'm not sure Leona Kate "Cluck" sounds very good due to the two one syllable "K" sound names right next to each other. Unfortunate. However, Leona Sophie is also nice, and I think Leona Sophie "Cluck" sounds lovely.

Sarah Maria
Jane Sophie
Cora Sophie
Charlotte Sophie / Charlotte Annabelle - possible nns: Lottie, Lotte, Chuck, Charlie
Helena Sophie / Helena Maria - nns: Lenny/Lenni, Lena (lay-nuh), Lanie
Thomasina Annabelle / Thomasina Kate - nns: Tamsin, Maisie, Tommy/Tommi
Cordelia Sophie - nns: Cordy, Cora, Corey, Delia
Imogen Kate (combo on my list) / Imogen Sophie / Imogen Annabelle - nns: Immie, Mo, Ginny

I really don't like Reuben. I've never found it attractive at all.

Elliott is okay, and Ciaran used to be on my list. I don't think Ciaran "Cluck" sounds awful, but something without the alliteration would probably be preferable. I would say either Ciaran John "Cluck" or Elliott James "Cluck".

Felix John / Felix James
Seamus Peter
Phineas James / Phineas Charles - nns: Phin/Finn
Tiernan James
Eamon James / Eamon Charles
Callum James - nn: Cal
Donovan James / Donovan Peter / Donovan Charles - nns: Don, Donnie, Novan
Simon John / Simon Charles
Mackenzie James - nns: Mac(k), Ken, Kenny, Zie
Hamish John
Malcolm James / Malcolm Peter / Malcolm Charles - nn: Mal

I don't think one name ending with the sound another name starts with is alliteration enough to be a problem. If your last name STARTED with a K sound then maybe (re: Kyla...)

like Kristin Kreuk from Smallville? Could be worse. My name was alliterative before I married and it didn't bother me any.

I like Isla. I have also seen it spelt Islay
Similar to Leona, I have a friend called Leonie (prn. Lay-onie/Lay-nie depending who she is introducing herself to) which may be less popular if that is something you were worried about.

I like all of your names =]

Mathilde is on my shortlist right now (just ttc, not pregnant) so no, I don't think it is too old fashioned. Tilda, Mattie, lots of great nickname possibilities that are cute and modern. And old fashioned names from 100 years ago are making a comeback, so by the time the kid is an adult, it won't have the "old lady" connotation that it does to our ears. It only feels that way to us because growing up, those were the names of our grandparents' generation. But the tide is shifting.

I think husbands ruin all the fun.

Our baby is due in June and will be Baby No Name at this rate.

My favorite of your girl's names is Maisie :)

Other ideas:
For girls: Charlotte, Olivia, Isabella, Mikayla/Michaela, Harper, Sophia, Ava
For boys: Sean, Julian, Henry, Oliver, Brendon, Keagan (and I also really like James as a first name)

I think you're right to be a little worried about Kyla "Cluck". What about Lyla/Lila instead?
