What do you guys think of Sybil/Sibyl?  Any ideas for a middle name with it?

I have liked this name for years.  I guess a lot of people have a bad association with it through the movie, but I've never seen it!

Also, what about Anthea?  I was looking for a sub for Samantha, and one site said that Samantha could have been a combo of Samuel and Anthea.  It means flowery.  I kind of like it, as a middle name.

I think both are dated but Sybil gets more street cred because of Downton Abbey.

Sybil Edith
Sybil Rowan
Sybil Carmel/Carmella
Sybil Olympia
Sybil Elizabeth
Sybil Erin
Sybil Florence
Sybil Thea

Sybil Edith makes my eyes perk up because Sybil was my grandmother's name, and Edith was her mother's name.

Oooh, I like Sybil Olympia. Good one!

Anthea sounds a little strange to me, though I've always kinda liked Alethea. It doesn't really link to Samantha, but it sounds less like anthem or anthrax.

Also, I just read Alethea can be prn as a-LEE-thee-uh, but I've always prn it Al-thay-uh.

I was referring to Alethea when I said it doesn't have the link to Samantha.

I work with a Sybil, and honestly I didn't even think of the negative association until now. I think it's reached a point where most people wouldn't even make the connection anymore.

And I do like it! But I love Anthea. :)

I also like Diantha as another substitute for Samantha.

ADORE Sybil. I like it with a sweet, short middle, like June or Kate.

I always associate Sybil with my maternal grandmother as it was her name, who I adored and was like another mother to me.

Sybil/Sibyl is okay. I think I prefer the Sybil spelling.

Anthea immediately makes me think of Mycroft's assistant in the BBC's Sherlock, but I don't think that's something to which most people's minds would jump. I think it has a pretty sound to it.

That's exactly the Anthea I immediately thought of :)

I know a Sybil, her middle name is Gertrude. Her grandmother was Sybil Jude. I love them both.

I prefer Althea to Anthea, and just Thea to either of them. But I do like all of those names.

When I hear Sybil, I think of the book, which I read at uni.

I think Sybilla is better. Or Sibylla.

There's an actress in Aus called Sibylla Budd. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sibylla_Budd

I'm not a fan of Sybil personally. I associate it with Prof Trelawney from Harry Potter (the association isn't bad-- I'm just not a fan of the name). But I don't dislike it either.

I love Anthea! It's uncommon but not unusual. And very pretty! Like another commenter, my mind jumped immediately to the character from Sherlock (whose name wasn't actually Anthea, but she claimed it was).

I think Sybil is adorable! Anthea is not quite my style, but as a middle name I think it's super cute.

I LOVE Sybil! It would be on our list but friends took it and used it for their baby first. :) I'm not sure what movie you mean, but I only have good associations. I like it on Downton Abbey, and I like the Leonard Baskin connection.

Some ideas:

Sybil Isobel
Sybil Rosemary
Sybil Olive
Sybil Fleur
Sybil Marguerite
Sybil Imogen
Sybil Elise
Sybil Eve
Sybil Miranda
Sybil Eliza

It is weird, I see Anthea a lot on baby announcements, and I can't pinpoint why but I just don't like it. To my ears it sounds like a strange mashup of old fashioned and trendy, like Theadora mixed with Aaliyah, even though I know it is a legitimate name. (If that makes any sense?) I also dislike Athena, even though it has such a lovely meaning. I kind of like the alliteration of Sybil Samantha...

I suspect we'll see an influx of Sybils due to Downton Abbey and the HP generation growing up/all grown up. It's grown on me a lot in the past year or two, though I still kinda rhyme it with gerbil. That puts a damper on it, haha.

Anthea reminds me of anthem. Make of that what you will.

I can honestly say that I hate Anthea, I think it's quite ugly.

As for Sybil/Sibyl...I'm not sure. I don't think that I would use it, but it's fairly pretty.

I've never liked Sybil, it sounds like a disease hahaha.

I like Anthea, although due to one of my favorite book characters being named Althea, I actually like Althea more.
I think Anthea would be a great choice though, not too many babies with that name these days.
