[identity profile] amyeliz.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
My daughter (our only child currently) is named Elizabeth Mae. We call her Betsy.

We are fairly certain we have our boy name chosen for some day, far down the line, when we have another baby: Theodore (Teddy).

However, for girls, we are sort of drawing a blank.
Any ideas for Betsy's (imaginary) little sister?

Names I like that my husband doesn't (to help with direction):
Maisie
Temperance
Adelaide
Lydia
Charlotte

We currently agree on Penelope (Penny), yet it is becoming increasingly trendy and we ABHOR trendy. We chose Betsy the way we plan to choose all future baby names - we want everyone to have heard of it, and generally know how to spell it - but they haven't come across one in a long time, if ever.

Thanks in advance!

I agree that Penelope may become trendy, but it's still a great, classic name. I think the Kardashians might be to blame. They named their son Mason--it shot up, and now with Penelope...

My suggestions (not sure if you're looking for every name to have a nn, but I've included a lot):

Winifred nn Winnie
Louise nn Lou
Cordelia nn Cordy, Delia, etc.
Josephine nn Josie, Fifi
Rosemary nn Rose, Rosie, Romy (my pick for a girl!)
Catherine or Katherine nn Cate, Kate, Katie
Millicent nn Millie
Victoria nn Tori
Delilah nn Lilah
Margaret nn Greta or Maggie
Henrietta nn Etta
Felicity
Marjorie nn Jorie
Frances/Francesca nn Franny, Fancy
Ruth nn Ruthie
Bridget
Althea nn Thea
Camille nn Milla/Mila
Beatrix nn Bea
Syliva nn Sylvie (Sylvie works as a stand alone name, too)
Helena
Gwendolen/Gwendolyn nn Gwen
Juliet
Tabitha nn Tabby
Pearl
Dorothy nn Dotty

If you don't like trendy, Charlotte was around #27 in 2011.

Penelope doesn't come across as trendy to me. It's not in the Top 100 or anything, it has a meaning and a solid mythological reference, and it's almost always spelled properly when used. Trendy names usually have none of those (think Kaylee/Kayley/Kailey/Kayleigh, for instance). It's really not even that popular---I know that two celebrities recently used it, but that doesn't always mean it will automatically hit the Top 10 or anything. Betsy and Penny would sound really cute together.

Suggestions:

Felicity (nn Fee or Lissie)
Josephine (nn Josie, Jo, or JoJo)
Mercy
Celeste
Millicent (nn Millie)
Helena
Catherine/Katherine
Ann(e)marie
Rosalie/Rosalind
Patricia
Constance
Louisa/Louise

I love your daughter's name, and Theodore.

Adelaide, Lydia and Charlotte are all decently popular, so if you're worried about that (idk if I'd call them trendy though), I'd stay away from those.
Maisie is cute, but as a nickname. I can't picture an adult Maisie.
Temperance is...not my style.

The first name I thought of is Joanie (Joan, Joanne, Joanna, Johannah). What about:
Margaret (Maggie, Margie, Peg, Peggy)
Susan/Susannah/Suzanne/Suzanna (Susie, Suzi)
Barbara (Babs, Barbie)
Dorothy (Dot, Dottie)
Katherine/Catherine (Kit, Kitty)
Adeline (Addie, Delia)
Vivian/Vivianne (Viv)
Camille (Cami, Millie)

Penelope or Penny sounds no more trendy than Betsy does, or any other names you listed

You want a name that both stands out and fits in--well, join the club, lol. That's probably the most common wish list for baby naming for our generation TBH.

Theodore never really went away and is on the upswing. It'll probably be back in the top 200 within a few years. I've met more than one Theo under 5.

Popularity charts are your friend. I would pair Betsy with other mid century names that have dropped off or at least way down the charts: Phyllis, Linda, Marsha, Joyce, Paula, Sharon.
