Okay, based on a convo I just had with [livejournal.com profile] grypx...

How do you pronounce Sarah? It happens to be my name. I thought it was just a standard, normal pronunciation, but apparently not.

I have always heard it (my whole life and referring to anyone else with the name) as sair-uh - the first syllable rhyming with hair.

You?

I would pronounce Sarah the way you described, but Sara like "Saw-ruh"

Most I know with the name pronounce it Serruh. I've known a couple that say sair-uh though.

I say it like you do - sair-uh - but I've also heard it pronounced sahr-uh.

I'm in Ontario, Canada - I wonder if it varies geographically?

That's what annoys me about the internet! What you think in your head doesn't always go into words the way you mean it to!

sair-uh. spelled sara, i'd be torn between sahr-uh and sair-uh though.

I'm pretty sure that's the only way I've heard it. But some of these other comments have slightly confused me b/c I can't hear what they are spelling.

And I've never heard a different pronunciation for Sara.

It's like the different between the Kara pronunciations.

car-uh or care-uh
sar-uh or sare-uh

hmm...I've never heard sar-uh, but I guess that makes sense since you can do Kara that way.

I pronounce it the same way you do. However, my name is Dara and I pronounce the "a" like the "a" in "cat" or "apple." Haha there is just no rhyme or reason to it!

In English I'd indeed pronounce it the way you described. In Hebrew I'd pronounce it suh-ruh.

For the record, I pronounce Sarah and Sara exactly the same way. Sair-uh. Sahr-uh, well, that just sounds weird to me.

Also, the Meghan/Megan thing. I pronounce them both Megg-ann, but some say Mee-gann, regardless of spelling, and I know one Mee-gann who spelled it Megan and insisted that Meghan is Megg-ann and Megan is Mee-gan.

I *loathe* the Mee-gan pronunciation, and Megg-ann is boring.

i pronounce it sair-uh.

I pronounce everything the same way as you do. Sarah and Sara are the same. As are Megan and Meghan.

And I'm also in Ontario, heh, so maybe that's why.

The sar-uh Sara I know, her mother immigrated from Columbia. So it might be the way it's said in Spanish or Columbian Spanish... I'm not sure.

I say it like you do, but I've known several Saw-dah (you know where dah is really a rolled Spanish R) I will generally start with Sair-ruh, but if the person says Saw-dah, so will I.

Yes, there are geographical differences in the way that people pronounce (and even hear) certain vowel sounds.

Poke around this speech accent archive (http://accent.gmu.edu/browse_language.php?function=find&language=english) online (with speech samples from people from various regions) and you'll get a taste. Some of my online friends and I did our own version of this and we were rolling just listening to all the different ways people said "bags" (bags, baygs, beggs...)

That's the only way I've had someone pronounce my name. But I've had some interesting spellings.

I'd pronounce Sarah and Sare the same.. Sair-uh.
I've never known anyone to pronounce it Sahr-uh, and if I ever do come across it, I'd probably laugh. To me Sahr-uh sounds like someone trying to 'church up' the commonness of Sarah.. LOL

SAIR-uh for Sarah, SARR-uh or SARR-ah for Sara, ZARR-uh/ZARR-ah for Zara, SYE-ruh for Saira.

I always thought "Mee-gan" was the pronunciation for the spelling "Meagan/Meaghan" :-/

Re: Sarah - I've always said it "Sair-uh" too. And I live in CT.

I say it as sair-uh, for both Sarah and Sara. My grandmother, interestingly enough, pronounces the name as sur-uh, but she has a central Virginia dialect and pronounces her A's strangely.
