How do you feel about the name Anders? My husband and I are really growing fond of it. I feel like it's one of those names you really have to own, and when you do, you can totally rock it from a toddler to an old man.

Am I being blinded by my hormones?

Anders isn't bad though

It makes me think of Dragon Age. I actually like the name but I like Dragon Age so...

I can't stand it. It's so common and boring here.

First thought was of that guy named Anders Breivik who shot up Norway last summer.

I'm torn. I like the sound of it, but I would never use it because I associate it with Scandinavia (which I really have no association with) and heavy metal (a lead singer of a popular band, In Flames, is named Anders). We had a friend years ago very into the band and he was considering it for his son. They went with Zion, but I honestly like Anders better!

So I suppose it's more of a guilty pleasure name for me.

It makes me think of the gun massacre guy from Norway. For this reason I don't like it.

All I think of is the Morwegian mass murder Anders Brevik! Sorry

I really like it! It's my cousin's name (we're all very Swedish on that side of the family). I do see what people are saying about the mass murderer in Norway though; not a great association.

I think that it is still so recent, maybe a few years out and no one will really have that association.

I read Andres... That would be perfectly fine but I'm not a fond of Anders (I keep thinking people will say Andrés constantly).

I'm a bit torn. Personally, I really like the name. And I know two Anders my age, and one about three or four. He has a twin sister named Ingrid, which I always thought was a cute pair.

However, there is the issue of Anders Breivik, which is what I immediately associate with the name, and I'd bet a lot of other people do too. I wouldn't want to name my baby after a racist mass murderer, but it is possible he will fade from history eventually? Sort of? Still, it is kind of a morbid name now.

world history? He'll probably fade. Norwegian history not so much. But in a way, a name is just a name. There's been babies named Anders in Norway in the last year and we won't really know until next year when the name statistics are released if it's had a major impact or not, name-wise.

It sounds like a nickname. Maybe Andrew, and you can call him Anders as a nickname? Then he'll have something less "cutesie" for his business cards, if he likes.

I like Anders. I went to a college full of Norwegian-American pride, so I know several great guys named Anders. I agree with you that it's a very wearable name regardless of age.

I know two people with that name, one pronounced it "And-ers" and one pronounced it "Ahn-ders". Honestly, I don't care for the first pronounciation, but I think the second one seems like a mispronounciation.

The OP is from the U.S. and Anders is very uncommon here, so that may be one reason she likes it.

If it's common over there, that's hardly going to change because of one guy. Like, if there was a mass-murderer called John whatever in the US, it's not going to affect the name popularity that much, there's too many associations for one to keep standing out. Adolf = unusable; Joseph=unaffected. Really just depends on how common the name is.

I know, as most people on here are. But that's my reason for not liking it. She did ask for opinions :\

Yeah that's what I think too. I heard that in the following months of 2011, only 9 boys got Anders as a name, but that could be completely normal because Norway's a small country and names fluctuate.

It makes me think of Anders Eriksson (he played for the Wings back in the '90s). I will say, the announcers were inconsistent in the pronunciation; in line with [livejournal.com profile] designingdreams's comment. (Random fact: a search on NHL.com's site pulls up 19 players past and present with the name, so there is some familiarity with the name in the US, if just amongst hockey fans).
