[identity profile] velkoria.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
Hello people of baby_names! I am currently taking a creative writing class at the uni and I'm writing a story with a female main and her two sisters figure greatly. I have managed to get through a bunch of the story without mentioning the character's names but I want to bring that in now. Thing is I am having a hard time naming them! So I come to you for help.

The story is a sort of science fiction story set in the distant future. Sort of depressing (isn't most science fiction, though?) and the catch is I want the characters to have plant names. Not necessarily flower names but tree names and stuff. Of course, this decision came after reading about the little boy named Sequoia on here and of the sib set Sequoia and Acacia. Of course I also want to be careful not to make it too Hunger Games sounding (even though Panen and my setting have next to nothing in common) so NO Katniss or Primroses.

The main character I had originally started calling Zuma in my head. She's a sort of telepath, loner, scary smart and compassionate soul. If it makes any difference she was born in a rainy season and constantly daydreams about rain (relevant to the story). I had the idea of calling her Lily but that seemed too delicate for her. She's described as sensual without meaning to and has dark hard eyes. She is tough on the outside but easily crumbles on the inside and full of resentment. I also played with the name Thorn but thought "who'd name their kid after the ugly part of a rose?" so... I don't know but so far that seems to fit her the most. She's not girly at all so nothing like Rose or any other delicate flower would fit her.

The second character is a lot like the first but somehow has managed to work through most of the resentment in her. She managed to marry and moved away from the place she was raised in. This character is tough on the outside and inside. She sounds more like a  Willow. She's tall, elegant, beautiful and makes no apologies for herself. (in fact in a way, everything the first character wishes she could be). This character is much more elegant than the first but still not girly... She's described as cold sometimes but with a soft side. She commands a room upon walking in with just her beauty and elegance.

The third one is kind of the opposite of the first two. She's more girly, full of color but also a bit depressing. She's said to have been beautiful and adventurous but something happened that 'wilted' her. She's lazy and romantic and also a bit on the dreamy side always expecting things to fall on her lap without lifting a finger. She is older than the other two and wishes to find true love still (that kind of drives the other two nuts). She has no job and lives off he money her parents left her (not much) and is still "trying to make something of herself". She can be fun, loving and full of color and is the only one never described as cold. She could hold a name like Poppy, Rose or Tulip

So... hit me with your creative ideas!

I once wrote a story (never published or even finished) with three sisters in their 20s. One sister was very maternal, feminine, and warm, and called Azalea. Another sister was athletic, seemingly aloof, but passionate, and I called her Amaryllis. The third was good-intentioned, but a bit self-indulgent, and unreliable, and I called her Anemone.

Many of the characters in that story had plant names, because a local, long-established family had an almost equally long tradition of plant names. Some that I can remember included Fern (a 13 year old tomboy), Daisy (a nice but timid teenage girl dominated by a controlling, perfectionistic mother), and Henna (a sophisticated and wickedly funny young woman).

Feel free to use any/all.

What if the main's given name was overly girly like Rose but she goes by Thorn bc she hates the delicate nature of Rose. Also, seems like it would be fitting given her tough exterior but soft interior and changing your given name could be an act of resentment.
