I was at the US/Canadian border (Niagara Falls) this morning and near the exit (after clearing immigration) there are some missing posters. One name that stood out -

Jesokah

Born 1985 in British Colombia.

Was it a girl? I mean, a fancy spelling of Jessica?

At first I said Jess-OH-kuh. Then reality hit me over the head and I realized that atrocity was actually a horrifying version of Jessica. Not that my original thought was much better. It's horrible either way.

I said Jess-Oh-kuh too and guessed it was a boy.

It took me a while to get Jessica from that. I was thinking Old Testament Jebidiah-type names.

I had to sound it out syllable by syllable before the light bulb went on and I realized that it was a horribly butchered version of Jessica. Do these people not realize that their kid will have to learn to spell their name? And people will forever be mispronouncing it. Ugh. We altered the spelling of our daughter’s name a bit, instead of the traditional Hailey, we went with Haylie. But at least nobody butchers the pronunciation. And we used all the same letters, just in a different order. :D

It seems like the parents reeeeally wanted an old testament name, but couldn't think of one.
