A previous post has set me thinking about bad spellings and if your parents saddled you with a badly spelt name, would you change it? I think that I most definitely would, but I wouldn't want to offend my parents; I guess it would depend how badly it was spelt and if you'd learnt to live with it as a kid. I know a Aleesha who has a PhD and I just think that even with Dr. in front of her name, it looks like a mess - I'd definitely change it. I also know a Keeliegh whose dad accidentally misspelled her name and she hasn't changed it because it's the name he gave her and she fiercely defends it.

My brother-in-law, David, decided a few years ago to spell his name Dayv. I thought that it was a phase, but he's 28 and still doing it. I can't bring myself to write it down so I address all his cards to David.

My sister had the misfortune of having her name spelled Yrene and not Irene. She has never used Yrene in her life and if changing your name was legal she'd change it in a heart beat. The only things that say Yrene are legal documents. She even SIGNS Irene. If my name was wrongly spelled I'd change it if I could.

My parents did saddle me with an oddly spelt name, unfortunately. I haven't changed it but I do hate it.

I can tolerate unique spellings to an extent. I mean, I grew up as an Amanda in the 80s, so we were all Amandas/Jessicas/Jennifers. Damn near all of us. That's why I give my kids more unique names, and I understand the drive to be more individual. But if I was saddled with a real abomination, like Aamahnndah, I'd have changed it in a heartbeat. Hell, I wanted to change my name anyway, since I never liked it, but I was named for my grandma (kind of - She was Emma Louise, but my mom liked Amanda Louise better & thought it was close enough, for all I wished she hadn't), and I just never found anything that fit better. It was hard enough getting people to stop calling me Mandy, which I insisted they stop when I was five. I still hear that from over half the family. lol But, yeah, if they'd saddled me with a truly ridiculous spelling - especially if the normal version was an awesome name - it would have been changed by insistence as soon as I could write and legally as soon as I hit 18.

To heck with my parents' feelings. If they gave me some krhy8evleigh spelled mess of a name, I'd change it in a heartbeat. They don't have to live with it every day like I do.

Rolling my eyes at a grown man changing his name to Dayv.

My taste is that of traditional spellings but that could be because I am surrounded by relatively 'normal' and common names like Thomas, Anna, Rose, Patrick, Laura, Stewart in my family. I have yet to see any crazy spellings of my name [Louisa] but if my parents had blessed me with something like Leweeza I'd be very, very tempted to change it :p

My name is Cristi. It's really annoying when I spell it out for people and they still write some variation of Christi, Christy, Kristy, etc. I don't mind it though, I wouldn't change it.
