Dated name

There's a girl that comes into my place of work with her mother. The mother is a regular customer. Her son is called Harrison, which I think is quite trendy, but her daughter is called Mabel. I just can't see it as a fashionable name. It's like calling a daughter Joan, Mildred or Doreen. WDYT? Can you see the name Mabel coming back into fashion? Is it already getting there? Anyone know of any other little girls called Mabel?

I had an imaginary friend named Mabel. Haha. I don't know of any under the age of, like, 75 in real life though.

Didn't it enjoy a brief comeback when Dharma and Greg named their kid that on the sitcom?

Did they? I know 'Mad About You' used this name. Dharma and Greg too?

Oh, maybe that was it. I didn't watch either, just happened to catch that episode.

I'm surprised it hasn't come back into style with other old-fashioned names. It's one of my favorites. I see it as very sweet and pretty.

I like Joan, too, actually.

Harrison, on the other hand...yuck.

I LOVE Mabel. Love it. Mabel is cute to me, and May/Mae would be an adorable nn. I think Mildred sounds gross, same with Gertrude, but Doreen isn't too bad to me, nor Joan.

My dad had a coworker who named their daughter Mabel and my dad was like "WTF?"

I also have a friend with a dog named Mabel.

A couple I know named their daughter MaeBelle. She's 3 or 4 years old now...

My cousin just named her daughter Mabel. I bet it's going to trend up this year.

I know I saw an earlier post or two that talked about younger girls (maybe a baby in there?) named Mabel. And in the new Disney cartoon Gravity Falls one of the main characters is named Mabel, and she's a twelve year old girl. It's been growing on me.

She is kind of awkward and dorky looking in that show isn't she. In fact they all are kind of dorky looking in that show. Sounds like they made her sort of dumb and ditsy too and made her brother the smart one. Hmmpf. Is that true?

I think Mabel sounds kind of sweet. I don't really have a problem with Joan either, although I will agree that Mildred and Doreen don't have a very nice sound. I could see it making a comeback as other more old fashioned names have begun to do, especially if it is featured in a television show or two as the comments would lead me to believe.

I like Harrison as well. That one is even on my list. I don't think it is all that trendy. In the US, the most popular it has been in the past 20 years is 174. It seems to hover around 200 for the most part. I'm sure popularity varies from region to region though.

I had a great, great aunt named Mabel. She was hideous. I can't possibly ever see it on a child because of that. It's the ugliest name ever. Haha. And yes, it's up there with Mildred. Or even Gertrude (Gert). ICK! (IMO of course). We were told our daughter's name was old and 'heavy' - it's Margot.

I think Margot is such a sweet name for a child, but I guess the only Margot I've ever known is a little girl. She's six now, but I met her when she was a toddler.
I'm not fond of Mabel though. I had the same thoughts when a mother brought her three-year-old Gretchen to the knitting group. At least Mabel is soft sounding. Gretchen is so harsh.

Awe, I love Gretchen. I really like Greta, too, which sounds kind of similar.

the only Margot I knew was a year older than me in grade school, so i didn't associate it with old lady names up until "despicable me" came out.. the 3 girls are edith, agnes, and margot.and at first i thought "2 old lady names and one not" until it hit me that it probably is an old lady name and I just didn't know it. lol.

I LOVE Mabel. I've liked it since my friend at school named her cats Mabel and Ethel.

I know a few little girls named Mabel, most are in sibsets with other equally traditional/underused names that IMO have a sweet sound. I've also met a sibset with a Mabel, Payton, Charlie and Jett.

I think its pretty likely to become more popular in the next couple of years, especially since May/Mae/Mai and names with that sound, i.e. Maisie have become so popular. Same with Belle/Bella/Elle, although Mabel doesn't have a strong "Belle" sound. I also reckon that there will be a lot of trendy variations i.e. Maebelle/Maybelle etc to emphasise those popular sounds.

Mabel at least you can use May or Mae as a nickname.

I may start calling my cat Mabel when she's naughty. Her name is Maisie. She doesn't have a 'stronger' name to be called when she's a bad kitty!

Her little sister, Edie, gets Edith! It's started me actually liking the name Edith, even though it's another of those 'old' names.

I think it is still a pretty awkward old-lady sounding name to most people. But it is getting more popular that it was in the last 30 years. That doesn't mean it is going to be a star rising name. I think the majority of people out there still think it is horrible and ugly. In Shrek one of the ugly ogres was named Mabel and that is how I think the name is still pictured. A big old frumpy woman type. Or a cow.

I actually met a girl a few days ago, who was probably between 20-25 who was named Mabel. First time I ever met one, though.

I kind of like it.
